DoC, you may wish to tee up a post about the upcoming change in securities trades settlement time-frame. There are many people who use the current T+2 float and may be in for a surprise when it changes to a T+1 settlement. I use the T+2 free float all of the time and I am going to have to be very mindful come May 28.

7 Things to Know About T+1 Settlement

JD
JD (@guest_1830631)
April 14, 2024 10:40

Curious, what are some ways you make use of the T+2 settlement, and how will T+1 affect it?
mangorunner

  JD

One example: Use margin to purchase an equity/stock/ETF (T+2 settlement). Don’t liquidate SWVXX until the next day (T+1 settlement). Get one-day free float; zero interest charged.

After May 28, I will have to sell SWVXX on the same day as the purchase because both will settle the next day (T+1).

(SWVXX is a Schwab money market fund that does not auto-liquidate. It works like a mutual fund and you have to place a sell order to get the cash available.)

Same with selling any mutual fund to cover the purchase of a stock or ETF: after May 28, the stock/ETF purchase will settle in one day, and you will have to sell the mutual fund on the same day as the stock/ETF purchase (rather than the next day).

You’d also need to be classified as a PDT and have a 25k+ acct to avoid freeriding violations…

mangorunner Are you actually making money off of these quick ETF sales? I can see this working w things like stock where the price varies enough that you can actually make a profit. But, in my experience w ETFs, the price is pretty level. Are you somehow earning interest from the time that you owned the ETF? Maybe the value of my same-day buy/sale of ETFs was so low that I never earned interest?

I will have to read more about it.

I am definitely not a day-trader. I have never day-traded in my life. 😁

I am not selling any ETFs. I purchase and hold them for life. I am a Boglehead, through and through. I am purchasing VOO and VTI – “forever” ETFs.

As long as he doesn’t sell anything before its fully settled, there shouldn’t be any good faith or freeriding violations. The switch to T+1 actually shortens the window where violations can occur.

Thanks, I figured a margin account was involved. So with the margin purchase, interest charges don’t start until settlement? You’re just using it to increase your buying power, but never actually carry a balance, correct?

mangorunner
mangorunner (@guest_1830653)
April 14, 2024 11:28
  JD

JD, Yes, 100% correct.

Same with purchasing a CD with a far-out settlement date. Sometimes it is as much as two weeks in the future from date of purchase! You have to really make sure you check out the settlement date when you purchase CDs through a brokerage (and I always buy through Schwab, because I usually get as good a rate as is anywhere else in the market and the brokerage makes it so much easier – and they don’t roll over). But I don’t sell SWVXX until the day before the settlement date. A sale of SWVXX has a T+1 settlement. I am not required to have the cash available in my account for the purchase of the CD until settlement date.

From Harry Sit, my favorite finance blogger:
https://thefinancebuff.com/brokered-cd-vs-direct-cd-vs-treasury-worth-it.html

I never actually pay any margin interest. I am very careful to always have the cash in the account by settlement date.

If you use Fidelity, you likely got a message. I just happened to see it when looking for a SM response from them the other day. It was sent on 4/3.

T+1 settlement is coming. What is it, and how will it affect margin customers? The settlement cycle across the financial securities industry for certain transactions will go from T+2 to T+1 effective May 28, 2024.
Next StepThe T+1 settlement applies to securities transactions that are currently covered by T+2 settlement, including transactions for stocks, bonds, municipal securities, exchange-traded funds, certain mutual funds, and limited partnerships that trade on an exchange.* Additionally, margin interest begins to accrue on the settlement date, so this change will accelerate margin interest accrual on settled margin debit balances by one business day. The due dates for certain margin calls will also be accelerated by one business day. The new due dates are as follows:

Federal due date: T+3
House due date: T+3
Exchange due date: T+2
Minimum equity due date: T+3

*Please refer to the Securities and Exchange Commission website at SEC.gov and the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation website at DTCC.com for a complete list.

Sorry that I didn’t meet your expectations. I was only going off what you had said that it was their first comment, which it was. Since you have the big guns I assumed you knew what you were talking about.

Certainly people who post two times must know exactly everything about bank bonuses. /S I’m not exactly sure why you’re persecuting someone for asking a question. Why would they even need to ask it if they’re a PNC employee? Or, if going for sarcasm wasn’t even very funny. It’s not like the data points are hidden and Doctor of Credit is some secret club.

I mean really who says “activate” a direct deposit? I’m reasonably sure they are not completely English speaking, or at least not familiar with banks. Well that might apply to PNC employees as well so I guess my argument doesn’t hold water. 🕵️‍♂️

I just typed the same comment w/o adding my email and it went to moderation. I clicked the “i’ on that comment and it doesn’t show that I’ve made any comments. Maybe it’ll be linked to my comment history after it posts.

vc,

When you sign up with Gravatar’s website, your email address automatically gets linked to that gravatar on whatever site uses WordPress.

I know this because my gravatar has appeared on other sites completely unaffiliated with DoC after I entered only my email address.

BTW, I remember a similar thing happening with user Evilex that happened with favo🔗.

I couldn’t tag Evilex as they’ve surprisingly never commented in this post. A similar style comment appeared using their “user account” and they quickly wrote that it wasn’t them.

Unfortunately, there appear to be some lousy people that comment on this site. They seem to get enjoyment out of upsetting others.

“my gravatar has appeared on other sites completely unaffiliated with DoC after I entered only my email address.”

Right. When you enter your info, it uses your avatar. So favo’s email address was used when entering the comment. I guess that anything’s possible and there are a million different ways that someone could get hacked, but I think that it’s odd that someone magically has their email address and happens to come to this site and mention another user by what I’m assuming is their real name. What are the odds?

At the very least, someone knows which email favo uses to write comments. By the way, you should never post under the email address that you’ve given to anyone else (this is one of the reasons why). I noticed that favo has a link to a site in his profile. Maybe his email was posted there and he happens to post under the same email.

vc,

Yes, someone got access to favo🔗’s email address but like I wrote, they weren’t smart enough to use her name in the correct way.

This is not the 1st time that someone has referred to him by his real name on this site, usually in a negative way. It is not that hard to find someone’s real name when they post referral links on this site or their own site (especially as many as he has).

I am sure that you aware that some referral links have our entire name in them. I won’t name any here as that might give the “lousy people” more nefarious ideas.

Plus, it’s not like they were posting screenshots and selling them to competitor banks or investors. Who knows if that will even happen? Pretty sure the FBI won’t be busting down their door tomorrow.
