The Offer
- Join Alaska’s Mileage Plan before September 30th, 2017 and complete your first flight with us by December 31st, 2017 and earn 5,000 bonus miles
The Fine Print
- Bonus miles offer is valid only for new Mileage Plan members who enroll between May 20, 2017 and September 30, 2017, and complete a qualifying Alaska or Virgin America flight between the enrollment date and December 31, 2017.
- To qualify, the flight must be eligible to earn Mileage Plan miles and must be credited to the new Mileage Plan account; codeshare flights with other airlines do not qualify.
- An individual may receive the bonus a maximum of one time, even if they hold multiple separate Mileage Plan accounts.
- Offer is not combinable with other Mileage Plan enrollment or account activation promotions.
- Mileage Plan conditions of membership apply.
Our Verdict
Previously they offered Virgin America customers that didn’t have an account 10,000 miles so this isn’t as generous as previous offers. If you have children under the age requirement they are also eligible but you need to call to enroll them.
Earn up to 50,000 Alaska miles.
Got student loans? Refinancing them with SoFi can save you an average of $288* per month.
Plus, you’ll earn one Mileage Plan™ mile for every $2 you refinance, up to 50,000 miles**. Just enter your Mileage Plan™ information in the application after you’ve uploaded your documents.

Thanks for the post. I created my Mileage plan account on 3/26/17. I have a flight today booked 3 months earlier. I wonder if I will get the bonus. I did not use the link above to create my account. Based on the terms/conditions, I would think I qualify (since it did not state I have to create the account via the provided link or that the booking must be made prior to the above date (only the flight had to be after the enrollment date.) Do I need to do anything to qualify in my case ?
Their e-mail comment boxes prevent you from writing more than a few sentences. I reached out via twitter for a similar situation and had a fast and better than expected result within minutes. Highly looking forward to flying them on my flight later in the year. Just ask about the current bonus, new mileage account, but don’t provide too much information such as the original booking date.
As a follow up. I am back from my trip. Did not do anything different or special or contact Alaska. Got my 5000 bonus as expected since I met the terms of the bonus. Nice!
Also at the ticketing/checking area of the airport, Alaska had a huge sign advertising this bonus. Well, at least it’s an easy 5000 bonus miles for a trip costing < $100.
If you want to sign up a minor, the age won’t be accepted for the online application, but they can sign them up for the promo by calling Mileage Plan.
Here is my DP – I created an Alaska account earlier in the month and took a Virgin flight in mid-March.
I messaged Alaska support on Twitter requesting for the bonus, and they agreed to add the bonus as I just recently created the account and booked the flight.
So worth a shot if you have recently created account. Flight requirement maybe YMMV.
Awesome, great DP. Thanks montyFC!
Adding another DP here: created accounts in December (so well before the promotion start date) and took two Alaska flights in mid-March, then asked Alaska Support on Twitter to give us the 5,000-mile new account bonus — they said we didn’t qualify. So, there’s wiggle room, as evidenced by MontyFC, but that wiggle room starts after December (for account open date).
Wonder how friendly a CSR would be for adding this offer to an existing account. I setup a new Alaskan air account and purchased a 1st class ticket on 2/28. Too bad the price has gone up since then otherwise I would investigate cancelling, creating a new account, and booking again.
Considering it’s 1st class, worth a try
Contacting Alaska Air was worth the time & effort! Thanks to doc for posting this promo and MontyFC for the further encouragement.
Any idea of creating a new account with them? I created an account a year ago but didn’t even use it, now they don’t allow me to create a new account….
do you know if flights that have already been booked will qualify?
Don’t think so
