Rite Aid: Purchase $50 Shell GC, Get $5 In Plenti Points & More

The Offer

  • Rite Aid is offering bonus Plenti points when you purchase gift cards. Offer starts 5/7/2017. Offers are as follows:
    • Purchase $25 in Bass Pro Shops gift cards & get $5 in Plenti points
    • Purchase $50 in Shell gas station gift cards & get $5 in Plenti points

The Fine Print

  • Limit of two offers per customer (per deal)

Our Verdict

You’ll want to use a credit card that earns at a high rate on drugstore purchases, keep in mind the Chase Freedom is currently earning 5x points on these purchases. Some stores are cash only for gift card purchases, but varies by store. Keep in mind Plenti points are easier to cash out for a lot of people now.

UPDATE: Shell has lowered prices in upstate NY/CT to compete with the new Costco and BJ’s gas stations that opened in CT last month. Now they average 2.25 gal, drooped 12 cents. Now this a good deal. My RA accepted my 5% drugstore card (Wells Fargo) I bought 2 on 2 Plenti cards. The points applied instantly. The points, BTW, are not available till the next day.

Just bought two $50 shell cards at Rite Aid and the plenti points applied immediately. Tried to use my altitude reserve card NFC, but it wouldn’t take it – it wanted the physical card. So I used my Chase freedom instead.

Got $2 back (effectively) with the latest Plenti points promo (200 pt bonus for fill up). So the $10 bonus for purchasing $100 in shell cards became $12 dollars. With the untilmate rewards value from chase freedom (equal to about $8) this is now roughly about a 20% savings off $100 in gasoline. Still haven’t factored in the next TMobile Tuesday Shell promo, which will likely show up last week of May again.

Buying Shell gc for plenti points to use at mobil!

Shell and Exxon are the most prevalent stations where I live. Both charge extra for CC but paying with a gift card gets you the cash price. So I always buy GCs when deals like these come around.

Shell is more expensive but TMobile Tuesdays gives me about $0.30/gal off at least once per month, so this $100 in GCs will be useful eventually.

8% back using Chase (5% x $0.016 pt value)
10% back in Plenti points

Plus whatever TMobile gives eventually so I can use the GC.

How do you redeem plenti points?

Gerald

You’re asked at checkout whether you want to use them. At least that’s been my experience at Rite Aid, Exxon and Mobil stations, and macys.com.

Any minimums on redemption?

I believe its $25 at mobil.

No, at Mobil (and presumably Exxon) it depends on how many points you have. When I’ve had just over 1000 points, the pump asks if I want to use 1000 points for $10 worth. I’m guessing they round down to the nearest $5

The minimum at Rite Aid is $2.

The maximum (not the minimum like captainsave said) in Mobil/Exxon is $25 per transaction. I’m unsure if there is a minimum but I’ve used for less than $5 before at the gas station.

I’m unsure of Macy’s as I’ve never redeemed there.

Shell, at least in the northeast is at least 12-15 cents higher then Gulf/BP/and the independents. There are no savings here. Your 10.00 in PP will be spent in higher gas prices, but with a 5% card, maybe it would be worth it, but only a few cents. And most RA do not accept CC for gift cards.

Three reasons this is a good deal (assuming you can use a 5X CC to purchase):
1. At this price, Shell cards can be resold for a slight profit.
2. Certain stores (Stop and Shop, Giant, etc.) have gas points deals for Shell stations.
3. Even if Shell is 12-15 cents higher, that’s less than the 10% you’re saving in this deal. It may even be a better deal than eBay gas card deals, which typically have a 7% discount (and no 5X points).

After swiping your Plenti card (or entering your phone number) the system eventually asks you if you want to pay with points. A valuable feature of Plenti is that purchases made with points still earn points (vs Walgreens or K Mart SYWR where they do not). You achieve the maximum in Plenti potential carefully watching Rite Aid ads and occasionally get items for free with nothing out of pocket but points which are reimbursed.

You can’t use Plenti points to buy gift cards. It’s coded into the system.
