SPG Business Cardholders: Spend $5,000 Get 5,000 Points, Spend Another $5,000 & Get Another 5,000 Points

Reposting because enrollment link should now be working.

The Offer

Direct link (note this shows the old spending by dates for some reason and doesn’t seem to work for anybody. I’d recommend calling to get enrolled and also asking for some compensation for the problems with this offer).

  • Spend $5,000 on your SPG card and get 5,000 bonus SPG points
  • Spend another $5,000 and get another 5,000 bonus points

Our Verdict

A similar offer was sent out in June of this year, but some people couldn’t enroll even though they were targeted and received the targeted e-mail. Interestingly reader Elizabeth had this issue (and received some SPG points as a courtesy for the error), she also received this offer and wasn’t able to enroll either (even though this offer was specifically being sent out due to the issues last time). This time when she called to complain she was given a $150 credit for the issue.

This offer basically means you earn 2x points per $1 in spend (if you spend $5,000 or $10,000 exactly), SPG points are more valuable than most in my opinion and I’d happily take this offer. Last time this was sent out, it was targeted towards people who would have their annual fee due during this period – that makes this offer much less attractive.

If somebody can also post the login link, others can check to see if they are targeted or not.

Hat tip to readers Elizabeth & Christina

I was targeted but had to call 3 days straight. The 1st rep acknowledged that AMEX was put on alert about the issue. Supposedly registered me but no comp (she tried to play dumb and act as if I were talking about credit for the AMEX Offers). Signed up SO as AU (SPG Biz) for 2500 pts.
Called back to make certain I was registered and found out that I wasn’t. Rep signed me up and gave me 10K pts.
Called back again to find out the 2500 pts weren’t added and rep said there was no such promo of which I promised her she was “mistaken”. She took another 20 mins to find out it was true and supposedly gave me my 2500 pts. We’ll see!
Even if you’re targeted, don’t use the link. Call in instead and let them know that the link doesn’t work. I recommend doing this soon before its fixed/removed.

Didn’t work a few days ago, and didn’t want to ask my wife to call in (her biz card). Checked this morning, and I’m good to go! Thanks for reposting, Doc. Appreciate it!

Just got off the phone with AmEx. They didn’t register me for the promo, but opened a ticket on my behalf and said they’d update me.

Also told me to hang onto the targeted email for reference. No courtesy points. I wonder if they’re catching on…

This didn’t work for me on the 12th when the email was sent out, but just tried again and it did work, and I’m now enrolled. So they must have fixed something. If it didn’t work for you before, try again.

Called last night 9/12 and told CSR the issue I was having. Mentioned I was targeted for promo and registering was not working through email link. Was told they were working on fixing it and to check again in a few days. Call today 9/13 and told CSR I was targeted now and back in June (only was targeted now from what I remember) and neither time it has worked. Asked if there was any compensation for my trouble. Was put on hold and told a supervisor was looking into it. They couldn’t pull up the promo that I was referring to but took my word for it and told me I’d receive 10K starpoints ‘for my trouble’. Moral of story: HUCA

Called this afternoon and good/bad news. Bad news, no freebies. Good news, Amex is ‘aware of this issue’, is working to fix it and re-send the email to everyone that was affected so that we can sign up properly.

DP: I got targeted for this promo in the summer and earned the bonus points a month ago. I just called Amex to try to enroll for a second time, but the rep was able to see that I had enrolled and had already earned the points, so she told me I can’t enroll again, since I’ve already earned the bonus points. I guess it’s a one-time thing. I tried to play dumb and insist, but it didn’t work. It may work for someone else, depending on what rep they get. YMMV.

Don’t try the online chat. The rep there was worthless and told me it was a browser issue…which it obviously is not. They also said they couldn’t sign me up and submitted something to some team that was supposed to take 6-8 weeks to complete research…
