Plastiq No Longer Processing Payments with Amex Cards (Temporarily?)

[Update 11/2/17: it’s working again.]

A number of readers have reached out about being unable to make ANY Plastiq payment using an Amex card. Only Visa, Mastercard, and Discover work currently. Plastiq has confirmed with us that it’s not working right now, and indicated they don’t have a clear time-able for when it will be. But my impression is that it’s some sort of temporarily issue which should be eventually resolved.

As I  understand, even pre-scheduled Amex payments are not going through (correct me in the comments if I’m wrong on this). Be sure to pay whichever bills you have either with another card or another way outside Plastiq.

I’m confused as to what circumstances would require someone to go through Plastiq for utilities. I just go to the electric company web page and use my card for a one time payment or Auto-Pay. Are there some that don’t allow that? I wouldn’t want to pay the fee for that.

I know my towns water and sewer payment system does not accept credit cards. Actually can’t pay it online at all, have to mail a check or pay cash in the city office.

Just got notified by Plastiq that AmEx is now working, haven’t tried it out yet.

As a side note, Plastiq’s terms of service say AmEx is only accepted for: “Government, Utilities, Education, Residential Rent and Club Fees and Memberships”. Missing is mortgages, as we know, but also car payments.

Also in the terms of service:
“You agree not to use the Services:…For unsupported goods and services, including…
unsupported debt types (such as credit card balances, mortgage payments, or uncollateralized loans);”

This seems to say that mortgage payments aren’t allowed at all on any card. They’ve announced that AmEx and Visa won’t allow mortgage payments, I guess we’ll have to see if it still works for Mastercard.

I’m sure there’s a legal reason but without any inside knowledge it’s hard for me to understand why they’d allow rent but not mortgage payments. And by “they” I’m referring to amex/visa. Is what it is I guess.

A mortgage and car bill are secured loans. The creditors don’t want you paying your secured loan with an unsecured line of credit.

Hey You Guys,

I’ve got minimum spend to hit on an AMEX card…Plastiq is out along with Tio…Has anyone used the new RadPad Payments? Plastiq allowed me to send a “test” payment of $1 to my Landlord, but RadPad’s minimum is $200. Would love to hear if anyone has used it since it’s return.

Just tried to schedule a payment with AmEx and got “We are not accepting American Express cards at this time. Other card types are supported”. 🙁

It looks like TIO doesn’t accept Amex..? In payment options for me there are Visa, MC and Discover only.

does anyone know of a similar service for wire transfers like Plastiq? I use them to pay invoices and AMEX is our method

I also use them for invoices. In about 5 days or so I will have to call clients to make new arrangements. The checks sent by Plastiq were a very helpful way to manage business expenses all on one credit card.

Here’s to hoping RAT strikes again hard. F*** AmEx. Let them go down with the bath water. Would love to see them keep getting trashed.
