Air Canada/WestJet Also Raising Baggage Fees

JetBlue has started an unfortunate trend of increasing the price for checked baggage, United has already followed and now Air Canada/WestJet are informing customers that they will be increasing the fees for baggage. Tickets issued before August 21st, 2018 or travel before October 5th, 2018 will get grand fathered into the old rates of $25 CAD/USD per direction plus taxes and fees for the first bag and $35 CAD/USD per direction plus taxes and fees for the second bag. Tickets after those dates will be charged $30 CAD/USD per direction plus taxes and fees for the first bag and $50 CAD/USD plus taxes and fees on the second bag.

At this stage it’s more likely to be a case of when, not if American Airlines & Delta will increase the price for checked baggage. Apart from the price increase itself one thing I hate about checked baggage fees being increased is that it creates an issue with carry on baggage as more people want to travel with just carry on. Overhead bin space is already an issue on most flights I’m on these days and I guess that is only going to get worse as these fees continue to rise.

  • Little push back:

    1. Such major airline greed (esp. at a junction when airline profits are sky high) writes Southwest's next ad campaign for them. (and really awful that JetBlue -- only a recent newcomer to the "dark side" of tacking on luggage fees now become a "leader" into the abyss -- "new york" style

    2. Where is it written that these increases are "inevitable?" (when, not if).... Consider what happened in recent months when "merikin," United, Delta et.al. tried to emulate Frontier, Spirit et. al. -- with various shenanigans for "economy -" (as in no on board luggage, no advance seat selection -- guaranteeing you'd get a middle seat, be separated from your family, have nightmarish change restrictions, etc.) First, not all airlines went "all in" -- Delta, for example, resisted the luggage takeaway.... And now, most of the major airlines have reversed themselves.... American as of yesterday, no long has the econo-light fares.

Perhaps wishful thinking on my part.... but I don't "buy" it that these fee jumps are "inevitable" across the board. All it will take is one major carrier joining Southwest and leading the "resistance."

  • The Air Canada fee currency depends on what country you bought your ticket, so if you bought it in the US you pay the USD fee both ways. You don't get the CAD rate coming back from CAD.

  • Overhead space is often an issue because people can't put their bag into the overhead space properly, taking more space than belongs to them. The annoying part comes when they suddenly declare all space taken, and you're not allowed to bring your bag even if you can still find the spot.

    • So much B/S. Wake up. This is pure greediness by major airlines. Small aircrafts does NOT have enough overhead space, assuming everyone has one piece standard size carry-on. The gate agent and securities has been very strict on this.

You can still take your carry-on, in the end it will probably checked at gate. It's the customers who need to check their bags are being screws.
