[Update] American Airlines Gift Cards are again Working to Trigger Amex Travel Incidental Credit?

[Update 6/18/19: Multiple data points over the last few days are indicating that it’s back to coding as ‘Gift Certificate’. We’ll find out for certain over the new few days. Update 2: it appears that it may still actually be working. Let’s give it another few days for conclusion, I’m just putting out the update so people are aware it’s not yet for certain.]

Two data points indicate that American Airlines e-gift cards are again working to trigger American Express airline incidental credits. Presumably, physical gift cards will work too.

In February, American Airlines changed how they coded gift card purchase. Instead of showing as ‘Misc Fees/Taxes’, it began showing as ‘Gift Certificate’, and stopped working to trigger the airline credit. As of a few weeks ago, they’ve seem to have changed it back to ‘Misc Fees/Taxes’ and seems to be working again for the credit.

We’ll need to wait for more confirmations, but it’s looking promising that American Airlines gift cards will be again an option for the airline incidental credit, in addition to the existing options of Delta and Southwest gift cards.

    • I'm sure there is somebody out there that for some reason ordered gift cards with their credit card. If they were reimbursing we'd find out soon enough, but I wouldn't hold my breathe.

    • I purchased a $100 AA virtual GC on 12-19-19 on my Gold card same as I did in 2018. But this time I am still not seeing a $100 credit a/o 1-7-20. Anyone have any ideas why? I will be calling them tomorrow.

    • I do not have a DP you are asking for, but just want to warn others when you claim it worked. Please be specific that you used Platinum card... not a Delta card. It does work as it used to for Delta credits on Delta cards (just got mine on 7/3). That does not mean that the credit would work on Platinum Amex. Saw some posts when people were not clear on what card they claimed it worked.
      Thanks for DPs in advance.

  • Purchased $83 Southwest Gift Card on Aspire 6/27, still not credit as of today and tracker on benefit page still shows $83 credit left. Not looking promising. So using Amex cards airline credit for gift cards is officially dead????

  • Purchased $100 on 6/16 with the Aspire card. Description does NOT include gift card. Still no credit though.

  • Passenger Name: *
    Date of Departure: 06/15
    Ticket Number: *
    Document Type: GIFT CERTIFICATE

  • So this turned out to be bogus, people are reporting trying this and the charges are still coming in a GIFT CERTIFICATES, thanks for wasting our money on your inaccurate, unsubstantiated reporting

    • I've learned that anyone commenting on this site with 1 comment history is basically a Russian bot.

    • No need to be nasty. There were several DPs of positives, but they appeared to be only temporary. This is a loophole to begin with and always a risk so don't go blaming the people that helped you to begin with. Things can change without a moments notice. If you're blaming others, it may be time to re-think how you treat people in your life.

  • I used the AMEX Platinum on June 16th for a $50 gift card. The expense coded as a Gift Card purchase and I did not receive a credit.

  • Not working for me. I have the Schwab Platinum and purchased $50 AA GC. It posted on 6/17 and coded as GC, so no credit was received.

  • I purchased two $100 gift cards with my gold and platinum cards, on 6/15. I still have not received the credit back in either accounts. It does not appear that it is working for me.
