American Express Business Platinum: Lift 35% Cap To 1,000,000 By Spending $1MM To $3MM, Spend $3MM+ & Increase It To 3,000,000 Points Back

When American Express reduced the 50% rebate to 35% for Business Platinum cardholders they also introduced a cap of 500,000 points back per calendar year. Some heavy spending and redeeming readers have received the following offer:

  • Spend $1MM to $3MM in 2017 increase maximum to 1,000,000 bonus points back in 2018
  • Spend $3MM+ in 2018 and increase maximum to 3,000,000 points back in 2018

I don’t think putting $1,00,000 in spend on the Business Platinum makes much sense for most people due to the spending categories of:

  • 5x points per $1 spent on purchases made with airlines or hotels booked directly from AmericanExpress Travel website
  • 1.5x points on qualifying purchases of $5,000 or more
  • 1x points on all other purchases

I guess the 1.5x might be attractive if you really value Membership Rewards points or really take advantage of the 35% rebate (this makes points worth 1.54¢ each meaning you could earn 2.31% back effectively). The offer is targeted and if you’ve received it there is no need to enroll. If you’re a big spender, these cards might also be worth considering.

  • I love how we get posts about spending $3,000,000 a year and posts about saving $3 on gift cards on the same website.

    • Hah yes, me too. And the amazing thing is, there are people who do spend that much annually who still try to save $3 on gift cards.
