American Express Offering Generous Retention Bonuses On Business Platinum (150k Points)

According to Travel On Points there are reports that American Express is offering generous retention bonuses on the American Express Business Platinum. The best offer seems to be 150,000 points after $15,000 in spend. $695 annual fee is not waived. American Express has been offering a sign up bonus of 190,000 points or 250,000 points on this card but still surprising to see such a generous offer.

Best chance of getting such an offer is by calling in and threatening to cancel, you can try via chat but generally the chance of getting a higher offer is better by calling. You can read our retention guide here. If you give it a go share your experiences in the comments below.

  • I was offered 10k for $2K spend on my personal Gold. When asked why I was cancelling I said annual fee too high, so that might trigger it? IDK YMMV. Either way, I decided against it and cancelled.

  • I got offered 10,000 points for $5k spend to keep the Business Platinum open. Obviously that's not a great offer, but I accepted it because I wasn't really intending to cancel anyway. That's 2% if I redeem the points at 100:$1 to the business checking account.

I'll take what offers I can get since my last couple applications elsewhere have been rejected for too many inquires and too many accounts opened in the last 24 months.

  • Closed one 3 months ago. Reapplied for 250K offer and went into pending and then not approved for some returned payment on another Amex business card (which was not true).

Meanwhile applied for targeted Delta business for 75K and was instantly approved last week.

Called recon for Business Platinum today and after on hold for 5 mins, got approved for 250K +10K AU for 15K spend in 6 months…

    Life’s Good 👍

Only issue is how to use Dell $200 credit on 4 cards ($800) before June end… dell credits suck and dunno what to buy 🤦‍♀️

  • Reminder that retention offers can change daily, so call/chat multiple times before deciding. I think my record was probably 15 days on chat before I got an offer worth accepting. Other times after a couple weeks I've just canceled.

  • 2 Amex biz Platts- both offered 40k MR for $10k spend; 1 Schwab personal platt, is still under retention from last year so nothing. Last years offer was 45k for 4k spend. I led with, “I’ve got 3 Platinums and only need one for lounge access. I want to check the offers on all 3 and keep the one with the best offer open, and close the other 2.” Sentimentally I like to keep cards open, but, $ and time tell me to downgrade the Biz Platts and cull the Schwab. Dell credits are tedious. If I was using the Centurion lounge or every month it would be a different story.

  • Do you guys open with "I'm thinking of cancelling, are there any retention offers?" or do you bluff like your plan is to cancel the whole time and hope they ask for one?

    • Usually the first version because I am a wimp and also I cut them off from telling me the hundreds of breakage coupons that Amex offers, but don’t want them to actually close the card when I cut them off and say we gotta get to it.

    • Had to spend $10K for taxes by today, so took business plat retention and took 40K points/ 10K spend offer. Nothing better was available. Not even using points for annual fee.
Tried getting a new Business gold 150K points/ $10K spend offer before taking platinum retention, but first time got into pop up jail.
      I guess timings matter.

    • Yeah…that sorting of spending will do it. Putting only 5 figures a year on the card probably won’t get you the retention offer you want.

      • Hmm I spend 3 figures per year on each of my biz plats. I wonder what they'll offer me LOL
