[Expired] American Express Platinum: $30 PayPal Credit Per Month Until June 30

Update 3/24/21: Credits now posting for February.

Update 2/10/21: Credits posting now, but still nothing for February 1st purchases. Hat tip to r/churning

Update 2/7/21: It looks like the credit hasn’t been reset for February. Hat tip to Travel In Points & /r/amex

Last year American Express announced consumer Platinum cardholders would receive a monthly $20 streaming and $20 wireless mobile credit from May 1 until December 31, 2020. It looks like American Express has now replaced this with a $30 PayPal credit. There is no need to enroll for this offer, you just need to add your Platinum card to your PayPal wallet and then select this card when paying with PayPal. The credit is valid from January 1 until June 30, 2021.

Gift cards are excluded as per the fine print (‘Eligible purchases do not include fees or interest charges, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person payments including those for goods and services, or purchases of other cash equivalents’). This should be a relatively easy credit for most people to use, although it’s $10 less per month than the previous two $20 credits. This might have also been the cause of American Express no longer working on PPK.

  • Has anyone made a purchase on the last day of a calendar month and had the credit count towards that month even if the credit posts on the next month?

As long as the purchase posts before the next month, it should count for that month and not the next, correct?

  • Anyone having issues with their May credits posting? Normally they show up transaction day + 2...

    • @guest_1120099 @guest_1126598 All of mine from May 2nd just posted. Check your accounts.

    • @guest_1120099 Yeah, mine from May 2nd haven’t posted yet, even though ordinarily they would have by now.

      • thank you i was same transaction date too . i will keep an eye on it. i wonder why they can't get this stuff to work consistently

  • Have any of you received the April credit yet? I used PayPal for dominus on April 2nd and credit hasn't posted yet. My restaurant credit for the Aspire hasn't posted either (Also a purchase made on April 2nd). On the other hand, my cellphone credit posted a couple of days after I paid my bill (also on April 2nd).

    • Add $30 to your starbucks card by paying with paypal (plat card). Buy something at walmart online and pay with your paypal using plat card. Order some food with uber eats (see below).

      • Starbucks - overpriced coffee. I can make coffee myself as I invested in a very good machine. Walmart is usually cheaper in store for things I buy there. Again, Uber eats is overpriced. I don’t buy beyond the Amex credits amount as there need to be 25% coupon just to break even compared to buying directly from the restaurant. And I didn’t say I can’t use the -$30 balance. Can chat with a rep and they can transfer it to my bank account linked to my Amex account.

        • You might be able to, or you could just, you know, spend $30 on that card for something you'd buy anyway. $30 off your grocery tab next trip seems like a decent way to do it. I get the frustration with the delayed credit, but this seems like a silly thing to see as a problem.

  • Odd DP: I have had every Uber Eats charge via Paypal (up to $30 limit) credited quickly since this was rolled out in Jan, but only for one Platinum card. I’m working with 3 of them between 2 of us, and switching the “preferred” card in Paypal has worked to distribute charges and maximize the $30 reimbursements, except Uber Eats (via Paypal) charges the same card regardless of which is set as “preferred”. I have to assume this glitch is with Uber, and their customer service would have to improve to be called useless, so I just have to plan spending accordingly.

    • Yes, ubereats has a bad interface. Card is tied to your account even if you change your preferred card in paypal (I found out the hard way). You have to delete your pp payment method and then re-add paypal and pick the right card. It's a good use for the pp credit, especially with uber credits, just takes some work.

      • Just to clarify:
        -delete PP from Uber payments
        -change PP preferred card
-add PP back in Uber payments
-new PP preferred card will apply to Uber charges when using PP?

        • Delete PP from uber (I do it in uber eats)
preferred card in paypal does not matter.
Add new payment method to uber eats, paypal
make sure "use balance first" is turned off if you have a balance in your pp account.
pick the right card to use in your pp account (this is a direct tie to uber eats, regardless of what your preferred card is set to.
You are ready to order food. Remember when you place your food order, it defaults to using "uber cash" if you have any. Depending on what you want to use, you have to turn that off if you want to purely use your payment method (credit card or paypal). If uber cash is set to on, it will use that balance first and then charge your credit card or paypal once your uber cash is at zero, so you have to check the settings if you have a balance in uber cash that you do not want to use. I use plat/gold monthly credits first, then turn off uber cash so I can charge pp next. When pp benefit is exhausted, then I go back to using uber cash balance. Use credits first that expire each month before using your regular uber cash, which has no expiration.

          • I’m still not understanding, or I’m just thick. You said “pick the right card to use in your pp account (this is a direct tie to uber eats, regardless of what your preferred card is set to”. So what am I trying to accomplish if Uber will still disregard whatever card I select as preferred?

I understand the Uber cash/credits and PP balance issues.

          • from my experience and yours, it does not matter what you have listed as your preferred card. It matters what you manually select when you are linking your paypal account to uber eats. That card will stick with uber eats until you delete pp as a payment method.

          • I don’t recall having to pick a card when adding PP to Uber, but I’ll delete and give it a try. Thanks for following up.

          • Hey, that worked.

And now I’ve discovered that starbucks has the same problem, also does not allow you to bypass paying with your PP balance first.

  • 2 qualifying charges on 2 diff Platinum cards from early Feb finally posted credits on 3/23, I think these were done manually by AmEx. When expanding the charge descriptions in online activity, there is no indication as to what the credits are for, unlike when they post automatically and show both paypal and merchant.

  • My PayPal credits post like...2 days after the spend hits. Been doing this for awhile. Didn't think that was uncommon but apparently so?
