American Express WON’T Continue To Issue Personal SPG Cards Long Term [Rich Sign Up Bonus To Come]

Update: Looks like American Express’ will continue to issue the personal SPG card, but when the program merges under a new combined name sometime in 2019 they will lose the right to issue this mass market consumer card (via View From The Wing). This makes a lot more sense given the original media releases.

Update Small additional detail, Danny Deal Guru was told the following:

Additionally, there will be a very rich sign-up bonus coming in the coming weeks (different than the $200 statement credit you saw today). Have no fear!

According to DansDeals American Express will continue to issue the regular SPG personal card after August 1st, 2018. This surprises me given that when the new contracts were signed with Marriott, American Express & Chase the following was stated (emphasis mine):

Marriott expects to introduce new, co-brand products starting in 2018 with enhanced member benefits – super-premium consumer and small business co-branded products from American Express and mass consumer and premium consumer co-branded products from JPMorgan Chase

I have confirmed that this is the case with American Express with a spokesperson saying:

I can confirm that the SPG Amex Consumer card will continue to welcome new Card Members now through August 2018, and beyond

They also stated that the original press release didn’t mention exclusivity. I guess this means that maybe Chase will continue to issue the Marriott business card as well. This is good news for anybody that missed out on signing up for the SPG personal bonus, but I wish it was clearer early as people might have wanted to wait for a higher bonus of 30,000/35,000 points.

  • American Express won't pay Delta bonus points. Because they said I already had a card two years ago

  • Hey Doc @will , my annual just hit, I called to cancel mentioning I wasn't sure about the future after the merger and was told the card will def continue after August and will start earning a free night on the anniversary in the next annual fee, have you heard anything about this? Also I was offered 7000 points for 500 spend in a month, honestly with devaluations I'm not sure this is worth it so would appreciate input. Thanks!

    • Yes, the card will still be available for existing cardholders after August and will come a free night certificate after account anniversary. New cardholders will still be able to apply until the programs are both officially merged.

  • I just received a 3 page double sided letter from Amex outlining what is happening to my SPG card and all the what not's i'll be receiving. Has some 2019 dates on some of the jargon

    • Went out a well for the 25K literally 30 minutes before it changed. If they bring back something better, will be within 90 days so call up AMEX and ask for a match.

      • Can confirm, signed up for 25k offer, called for match (AFTER i hit the 7k spend for 35k pts they were offering), and asked for a match. 1 person said no, HUCA --> Manager, said yes.

  • I'm amazed sometimes the amount of time & energy people spend dancing around the Chase 5/24. Stop worrying about Chase! Churn CC's, earn & burn.

  • This article is flip flop. The title says AmEx won't issue regular SPG, but the content says it will continue to issue. Which is right? Just correct it.

    • Hi JS,

The title and content both say the same thing. We kept the original post below the update so people understand the confusion.

  • doc, the title really should say "AMEX Will Stop Issuing SPG Personal Cards (Non-Luxury) In 2019 [Rich Sign Up Bonus To Come?]". IMHO is clearer but thats just me.

    • Normally I'd agree but this is a change in stance so the current title makes this change in stance clearer IMO.

  • Consumer Amex SPG card for now -> eventually converted into the Chase Marriott Premier Plus sometime next year or 2020?

  • To those talking about a 100k bonus, I'm willing to bet it's 100k and even more for the luxury card. In the past you could earn 30k SPG plus another 5k for adding a second cardholder. That is more than 100k MR.

Amex needs to fix the free night award though. They should issue them to everyone who's held the card for a year as of 8/1. What they're doing is BS.
