American Express Transfer Bonus: 15% To Avianca LifeMiles (1:1.15)

Update 11/21/23: This is working again according to DansDeals. Not sure on end date and doesn’t show for me.

The Offer

  • You can currently receive a 15% transfer bonus when you transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to Avianca LifeMiles miles. Normally you can transfer 1,000 MR points and receive 1,000 LifeMiles, during this promotion you’ll receive 1,150(1:1.15).

The Fine Print

  • Valid until 8/31/23

Our Verdict

This is a very common transfer bonus from American Express. Previous transfer offers can be found here.

  • I just did this. Bonus doesn't show up on amex side, only shows up on Lifemiles side. Showed up instantly with the miles.

  • I don’t believe it’s targeted. It didn’t show up for a family member either but they transferred for an award ticket and were surprised to see 15% extra once the transfer completed. Even on Amex’s transfer page it only showed 1000 MR : 1000 Lifemiles when they were entering the amount of points to transfer.

  • I did get a good redemption recently for a one-way, in April, from New Dehli to Dulles for 80k on Swiss Air Buz but that just popped up one day out of the blue. But its a crap shoot with their fraud detection system as they will sell you the ticket and then cancel it later the same day due to fraud issues. I once had a boarding pass on a last minute buy and stopped at the Avianca office before the flight, and they said the ticket was invalid. Lifemiles will also lock your account until you send them id bla bla bla. So once this happens, forget about that redemption as you will be fighting with them for the next two weeks to access your account as your request to access your account goes into the black hole of Lifemiles.

    • I have redeemed +30 flights through Lifemiles and never had an issue with canceled tickets. Availability has decreased significantly the last 1-2 years, but I have not seen devaluations for flights I take in Las Americas compared to United and AA.

    • Lol...seems a pretty accurate description of how *everything* (not just award flight bookings) "normally works" in certain countries, including the one I grew up in (sadly I'm quite familiar with these situations and processes).

  • Lifemiles web site has not allowed you to check availability or book flights for quite some time now. I find it very odd that the issue would not be fixed. Could it be intentional, namely that LifeMiles is looking to pump up the sale of miles with the transfer bonus but then you cannot redeem the points?

  • read the Miles for Family blog post about Lifemiles. Site has been down for about a week.

    • This! Using their site always feels like a waste of time. Definitely one of the most frustrating airline websites. I'm stuck with 130k miles there that I can't use, and they expire within a year, too.

    • I had a similar problem with Turkish. They don't have my home airport in their system at all (United does fly in). They have a smaller airport 1.5 hours away in their system, but United DOES NOT fly there. I have sent repeated emails, but I don't think they understand my English. I get responses in Turkish requesting I call or use the website.

    • For me their website stopped working completely... just doesn't show any search results at all anymore.

      • I've tried every browser known to man and eventually got a flight booked using FireFox. No other browser seems to work, so if anyone is having issues, might want to try FireFox before giving up all hope.
