Our Verdict

Not as good as some of the previous transfer bonuses:

But has been some time since we have seen a bonus so if you have a need for these now is the time.

  • I would know what you're going to use the points for and only transfer the amount you need. I've flown around Mexico a lot and have not found AM to have very good reward values.

  • This saying applies to all transfer bonuses, but goes double for programs with the kind of fringe value propositions that AM has: if you have to ask if a transfer bonus like this is worth doing, it's not.

    • So I disagree. As someone not as well versed in these slightly more obscure programs I do think it's worth investigating these for potential sweet spots. I don't think you should TRANSFER until you have a firm idea of what you'll be doing them, but I think it's worth contemplating sweet spots you'd not have thought of under 1:1 programs.

Like I didn't realize the tremendous potential value using Virgin points on other carriers and other fairly decent redemptions especially with transfer bonus applied, and if I only thought of Virgin as "LHR-JFK" I'd be underselling it.

      • Sure, but in that case you're looking into it and making the judgment for yourself. If you want to just be told, without doing that minimal legwork, the answer is basically always "no"

  • I know a lot of people think Aeromexico is no good, but I used them for a trip this year and flew from Seattle to Puerto Escondido through Mexico City. Cost was 36,000 points for first class, which equals like 20,000 amex points. Felt like a pretty good deal to me. That was using some promo that was running at the time.

  • As someone who uses AM regularly and has spent a lot of time looking for award bookings, I'm not even excited since their point valuation is always so low.

    • How do you usually use AM points? Any sweet spots? I have some points stuck in my account for years due to a cancelled trip.

      • I've seen some decent value for AM J flights connecting to South America from the US through MEX, but that's really the only sweet spot that anyone I know has actually booked. MEX-EZE in business class for ~52k MR with this bonus is not bad, considering decent availability and a lot of connections that can be added to the US for not too much more.

But yeah, it's definitely not a program with a ton of sweet spots IMO.

  • just investigating using AM points...you have to call in to make an award booking!

Found no way to search or make online.

    • You can definitely make award bookings online but they don't make it easy. Their website sucks.

      • website blocked for me. multiple browsers. VPN turned off...all sorts of problems yesterday. was searching before this post.

          • no dice. Maybe I'll try from my tablet some day. Just on my desktop at the moment.

Flying AM LAX-MEX on Premier flat bed later this year...cash fare bought on Delta -- had ecredit needed to use up - not much more $200 ? then direct non-flat. Takes longer...but what the heck! Arrive in style. Enjoy the Skyclub, etc.. @ LAX.

  • Would love to take advantage for the new TPA to MEX flight they’re doing this summer but it seems like it’s not bookable at all with points
