  • You can currently receive a 40% transfer bonus when you transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors points. Normally you can transfer 1,000 MR points and receive 2,000 Hilton Honors points, during this promotion you’ll receive 2,800 Hilton instead (1:2.8)

The Fine Print

  • Valid through May 31, 2024

Our Verdict

American Express points are even more valuable than Hilton points even at a 1:2.8 rate so I don’t think this is worth considering. Here’s a list of the previous transfer bonuses:

  • i know this is expired, but why isnt thi worth consideration? 100,000 amex points went to 280,000 hilton points = 2.5 nights at resort = $2500.

  • Those that didnt receive the initial promo last month should check their accounts. The HH 40% popped up on my AmEx transfer page sometime this past Wed or Thr.

  • I chatted with Amex today because I was super annoyed by not seeing this offer when it was in their public news release: https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/newsroom/articles/products-and-services/american-express-celebrates-40-years-of-the-platinum-card--by-gi.html.

This is the answer I got from the agent:

Personal Platinum Card Members who applied prior to 20 April 2024 are eligible to receive 40% additional points when transferring to Hilton Honors as part of the Platinum 40th Year Anniversary.

    Also,
    1. We are aware of an issue with the Platinum Card 40% Point Transfer Offer to Hilton Honors and are working to fix it.
    2. While you may experience a delay in the posting of the 40% transfer bonus to the account, we will fulfill the offer for all Platinum Card Members who opened an Account on or before 20 April 2024.
    3. You may not see the Hilton Honors transfer offer in the Membership Rewards account but if you choose to transfer Membership Rewards points on or before 31 May 2024, you will receive the 40% transfer bonus.
    4. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and, should you choose to transfer points, we encourage you to check the Hilton Honors account balance over the coming days for the bonus.

    :D

  • if you need hilton points, it's great with the gold card and grocery 4x, since you end up with 11.2 hilton points per $1

    • Same with Gold card and restaurants, also 4x. And even Gold card and airline flights, since that's 3x, you end up with 8.4 Hilton points per $1.

But keep in mind that these promos are unpredictable in timing and amount, while you have to do those Gold purchases consistently over time.

So it only works that way really if you've been saving your Amex points for better Hilton transfers, rather than using your Amex points for multiple purposes.

      • Can you please explain what you mean by “with gold card and restaurants”? Do you mean purchasing Hilton gift cards?? Thanks.

        • No, I simply meant that the Gold card earns 4x on restaurants just as it earns 4x on groceries. The original post above mine only mentioned 4x on groceries, so I was just saying that you also get the 4x earning on restaurants with that card.

  • Had been waiting for this since 2021. Targeted. Redeemed. Received instantly.

Besides, valuations of Amex points worth 2 cents per point are too speculative for me.

Sure, there may be "value" in the flexibility of transferring to any of the various travel partners. But, many of those are simply not worth it. Like, I refuse to pay those absurd "excise" tax for Delta and JetBlue--Chase and Citi don't play games like this.

While I respect DoC (and tolerate TPG), I prefer a "breakeven" valuation. For Amex, that's $0.011 (to Schwab), previously $0.0125--I miss that.

If Hilton points are breakeven at $0.005, at 2.8x with the bonus you're getting $0.014. When you have a specific redemption in mind (like a fifth night free at an expensive Waldorf Astoria overseas), you could multiply to 5-10x value. That's the sweet spot.

Now, Amex, please do Marriott, too.

  • I have a Platinum card and nada. I could really use this right now actually so that's a big fat bummer.

  • Considering my alternative plan of cashing out at 1cpp I’m slightly intrigued by this
