American Express Uber Credits Will Require Paying With AmEx Card (Begins November 2024)

Update 9/16/24: TPG writes: “Note that you can use any Amex card as your payment method in order to use your Uber Cash — not just the card that carries the benefit. This means that if you have the American Express Green Card, for instance, you can use it to earn 3 points per dollar on your Uber ride.” Presumably they confirmed this with an AmEx or Uber contact.

Original Post 9/12/24:

AmEx is sending notification on the statements that the cards which come with a $10/$15/$25 Uber credit will require putting the balance of the Uber ride/meal on an AmEx card in order to use the credit.

Previously it was just a credit to your Uber account, and you could pay the balance with any card you choose. Beginning November 8, 2024, you’ll have to select the AmEx card as the payment option for the balance to cover the overage above the $10/$15 credit amount.

Hopefully it’ll still be possible to use multiple Uber credits on one ride/order when paying with an Amex card for the balance. We’ll see. Hopefully you can still use your Uber gift card balance for the ride and have the Amex card as the backup payment method (?).

  • OK. so I see the Uber credits from Amex platinum cards didn't come in. The Uber credits always came in my account beginning of each month but now you have to charge on the card first and then Amex will give a Uber credits?

      • Actually, the credits came in a few hours later. Later than usual but I was able to use the credits already. You should have credits by now. I guess as long as the payment method is Uber credits + Amex card, this will work. If there are enough credits, it won't charge Amex card. If not, Amex cards will be charged for the remainder.

  • So if I have 100GC, amex gives 10 on 10/1, its then 110. I order some food totaling 20, I select Amex Gold as payment even though GC covers everything.

Do I get Amex credit? or no?

  • Not sure what everyone's complaining about. Did some math and it looks like I net $695 per year from this change.

  • The way I'm reading this if your Gift card balance is $100, and you have 1 uber trip in a month that is say $50, then you'll lose the $10 AMEX credit - because the Amex card won't be activated for payment - but if that is indeed the case, why is AMEX adding to the gift card balance at the beginning of the month. Why don't they just treat it as a use or lose kickback like they do the dining credit. Anyway, all of this coupon book stuff is just getting too gimmicky and tedious. I'm thinking I'll downgrade to the Green card just to keep my Membership rewards and call it a day.

    • They do track regular Uber Cash and the monthly Uber Cash separately, and the monthly is used first. If you have $100 from a GC and $10 from the monthly, with "use Uber Cash" toggled on and your Amex Gold/Plat set as payment, you'd be doing exactly what the instructions say, and the whole $50 charge should use $10 monthly+$40 GC Uber Cash. But who knows how well their IT will actually match up.

  • As I read it, this just means the surplus cost after I use my $25 in credits will have to go on my Gold (or Aspire?) instead of my Savor One that adds 10x back on Uber! Been running it that way for years now.

    • Yes, you will need to pay the surplus after the credits with your Gold or Aspire Card, instead of your Savor One.

    • I believe you'll lose the AMEX credit. As I said in a previous post, they should just treat it the same as their dining credit. This approach now is just convoluted and silly.
