Update 6/7/22: More targeted

Update 5/23/22: More people targeted.

Update 11/18/21: More targeted.

Update 10/12/21: More people targeted, no e-mail this time but showing up when logged in.

Update 4/11/21: Another e-mail has gone out. Good through 4/30/21. Subject line is ‘There’s only a short time left to request an upgrade. Earn 40,000 Membership Rewards® points with this limited time offer’

Update 2/28/21: Huge wave of people targeted via email for a terrific upgrade from Everyday to Everyday Preferred – this time the bonus is even higher: get 40,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $2,000 within 3 months. Offer valid through April 1. Annual fee not waived.

The Offer

  • American Express is offering some AmEx EveryDay cardholders a bonus of 25,000 points when they upgrade to the EveryDay Preferred and spend $2,500 within the first three months (mixed datapoints of this is being six months currently)
  • Some people have a lower minimum spend requirement of $2,000

Our Verdict

EveryDay preferred has a $95 annual fee that you need to pay. If you’ve had the Preferred card before you can still get this upgrade bonus, if you haven’t had it before then doing this upgrade offer means you won’t be eligible for future sign up bonuses on this card. For more information regarding upgrade offers I’d recommend reading this post.

  • Targeted for 25K, 6 months to spend $2000. Before I downgraded, the Everyday Preferred was my go-to card for grocery spend, so I'm thinking I'll do the $2000 in the second quarter when Freedom has a non-grocery category.

    • As I recall, I got an offer again just a few months after downgrading. (But only for 15,000 points/$1000 spend in 6 months.)

  • I see 25k offer now again... still feel like I want to hold out for 40k offer... I wonder when they'll bring it back, if ever.

  • Phuck me rookie mistake. Got clawed back since I downgraded after the first $95 AF (already charged prorated AF after upgrade half a year ago). Was supposed to wait after the SECOND $95 AF but wasn’t paying attention.

Worth trying to beg forgiveness and undo the downgrade and try to get points back or is it a waste of time?

    • tried in the past, didn't work after I did exactly the same thing and closed early, they didn't undo it but maybe you can try. but then a few months later I was offered the upgrade again and did it properly (lots of phone reminders of when to cancel!) and was able to get the upgrade bonus points.

  • Seeing upgrade offer of15k for 1k spend, think I will hold out for a better offer

  • got email for 25k for $2k spend over 6 months. Did upgrade/downgrade a few years ago or what not. It's not 40k, but i'll bite.

    • have you done it before? I did the upgrade a year ago and now I was offered 15k for 1000 spend . were you able to get the bonus a second time?

    • I just got the same offer. Going to hold out till they come back with 40k.

  • I have two ED. Both downgraded from EDP earlier this year. I just received 40K MR for $2K spend within 6 months on one of them in the Amex mobile app transaction history as a bubble “pop up” between transactions. This offer did not show on my other ED. I noticed it allowed me to pick either of my two ED, but only one of them at a time. I chose one and then backed out and chose the other one.

Did it work? I’m not sure. No confirmation emails yet and nothing has changed in the mobile app.

    • Forgot to mention for my downgraded EDPs, one was from a similar upgrade offer to this last year and one was a brand new first time one opened before I upgraded last year as well.

    • DP: I called to downgrade the other day, and the (outsourced, overseas) CS rep didn't attempt any kind of retention offer at all. I had racked up quite a bit of grocery spend on the card during the previous year and a half, but not much unbonused spend, except for Amex offers.

The prorated fee reimbursement posted immediately.

(I had upgraded the card in May 2022.)
