Our Verdict
Office Max & Office Depot both sell $200 Visa ($6.95 fee applies) gift cards, what makes this deal even better is that it’s possible to split tender (e.g use multiple American Express cards on a single purchase. Make sure you’re polite and friendly when you ask to do this as always). Your best bet would be to split one $206.95 gift card purchase onto four cards, here is your profit breakdown:
- Purchase $200 gift card for $206.95 (-$6.95) using four American Express cards enrolled in this offer
- Earn $10 statement credit per card (+$40)
- Liquidate $200 Visa gift card (+$200)
In the end you’ll make a profit of $33.05 per four American Express cards, you’ll also earn whatever rewards points/miles your card normally earns as well.

Did a split tender on 4 cards today with $50+ on each card at OD. On swiping each card , the terminal asked if amount correct, i entered No, then the cashier keyed in the amount i wanted.
Thanks for your in-store report Alfred - it helped me secure a split tender transaction that was about to get shot down due to the seemingly knowledgeable assistant manager's belief that it couldn't be done with VGC's... After I showed him your comment he figured out the correct process and I managed to avoid having to cut deep into my profit on the deal by buying individual $50 cards!
Also, I highly recommend returning the favor for our cashiers by filling out the store receipt survey (and FYI: apparently the transaction needs to be rated as "highly satisfied" or else it counts as a negative stat for the them.)
Split tender not working at OM either. The cashier tried & even called for help from a manager. The manager tried it again, but no shot. He thinks it might have to do with a recent update to the registers. Oh well!
Split tender does not work. Called OD, store clerk (2 of them ) told me of couse you can split tender. Drove 5 miles to store. Lock down. Store Manager says NO split tender
I did a split tender very recently at OfficeMax, as did another commenter above. It probably works at OfficeMax and doesn't work at OD- their systems haven't completely merged.
Had successful reports at OD as well.
I will buy some 50 shell gas card
That is how I buy my gas with the ink to get 5pts per dollar and then 10 cents off at the pump since they give you the cash rate...planning on picking up some of those along with some ebay cards.
I saw the offer at all my cards + au cards at 4am PT when I was awaken by the earthquake. I wanted to wait until this morning so I can open up different internet servers to enroll. But they are all gone now. None of my cards + au cards show the offer anymore :(
That was fast: Sorry, max # of Card Members have enrolled in #AmexOfficeDepot
Will, this is dead now. Can you update your post?
Done, will try to do this more often but if you see any dead deals let us know like this so I can update it.
It is hard-coded now. The computer system will not allow you to split the payment any more. You can only pay the amount by using one card.
I don't think it's hard coded, lots of successful reports. Maybe it's store by store?
Are you sure? I was able to do a split tender at a local OfficeMax recently.
Gonna use for some ebay gift cards and then try to buy discounted gift cards!
Tried to do split tender at OD today. Cashier told me to swipe my Amex card for $206.95 and she would then try to change the amount to $50. Would not work. Ended up paying entire $206.95 with one Amex card. Any hints on how to instruct cashier on how to execute split tender of $50 each?
