Amex Offers: 2x Points at many Retailers Including Target.com and Bestbuy.com

The Offer

  • Amex has released a new offer to get double Membership Rewards (MR) points at select online retailers when using an enrolled Amex card
  • Offer valid for online purchases and – in some cases – for phone purchases as well; not valid for in-store purchases
  • Offer valid until the end of 2016

Here is the list of merchants that get double points:

  • Target.com
  • Bestbuy.com
  • Neimanmarcus.com
  • Gap brands (gap.com, oldnavy.com, bananarepublic.com, athleta.com)
  • Pottery Barn brands (PotteryBarn.com, potterybarnkids.com and PBTeen.com)
  • williams-sonoma.com
  • westelm.com
  • BergdorfGoodman.com
  • markandgraham.com
  • Intermixonline.com
  • rejuvenation.com

This offer should be showing on any MR-earning credit card. You do have to save the offer for each one individually.

There was also a similar offer to get 2x MR on Amazon purchases; that offer is valid through July.

Our Verdict

2 MR is pretty good, and it can be 2.5 MR when using the Everyday Preferred card. It’s clear in the fine print of the offer that the 50% bonus will not apply to the Amex Offer addition so it will be 2.5 total.

Most merchants have better ways of paying. For example, you can get 5% back at Target when paying with the REDcard. And Best Buy also has a credit card which earns store rewards.

The offer is still useful for someone who doesn’t have these store cards or for buying gift cards, e.g.  buying Target gift cards from Target.com which doesn’t get the 5%  REDcard discount.
