For those that have the chase Amazon Prime visa, which nets 5% back on Amazon purchases, this 1 nominal + 7 bonus MR points amounts to a 3% extra bonus (maybe a bit more if you value MR as high as some, shall we say, potentially biased bloggers), and it’s capped at $286 spend, which would be ~ $9 extra bonus. I wouldn’t be disappointed if I didn’t have this offer. But for those who don’t have the 5% Amazon Prime Visa, and need to spend $286 at Amazon, it’s worth ~ $23

I don't think it's at all unreasonable to assign a value of around 1.2-1.6 cpp to Amex. You can pretty consistently squeeze that out of coach flights with Jetblue (especially if it's stacked with the 10% bonus from the Jetblue card) and BA, more when there's a transfer bonus. Which then is pretty substantial.
I'm just as leery of bloggers inflating point values, but if you're redeeming Amex points at 1cpp you're doing a disservice to yourself.

I actually got targeted for this on my Gold card. Been a while since I got a better than mediocre amex offer.
