    • Definitely not, because BW GCs bought online are not billed to Best Western, they're billed to a company called Givex, because when you want to buy a BW GC online BW redirects you to a Givex website.

That's not just a BW issue. Very often, buying of GCs and buying of points/miles is outsourced to another company (such as points.com), so it doesn't count as a purchase from the company whose name is on the GC or whose name is on the points or miles.

That's why you'll see questions posed on other hotel promotion pages on DoC asking whether you can buy gift cards at a particular hotel brand, because only gift cards purchased at a hotel would count.

But since "all Best Western hotels are independently owned & operated", I doubt that most, if any, sell gift cards at the hotel itself. You'd have to ask each hotel individually if you were interested.

      • They no longer sell the GC at the hotels, haven't for a long time. And the use of the GC when you get it is a mess because there has been so much turnover and the new staff at the franchisees has no idea how to deal with GC. I experienced, on three consecutive stays at separate properties in 2021, attempts to use none of the gift card, all of the ($500) gift card (!), and the wrong amount of the gift card. Resulting in, respectively, charging all to credit card when none of it should have been, having to do a three way call with BW corporate to restore the proper amount to the gift card, and having to call the property to correct the charge to the gift card.

Since the GC is driven by corporate wanting to book revenue before guests stay, it is a clear case of misaligned incentives between corporate and the franchisees. The franchisees do not give AF because they view it as a kind of unfunded mandate from corporate and so few people use the gift cards; corporate already has the money, probably doesn't pass it all to the franchisees for a GC stay (much like with free nights), and is not willing to herd cats to verify competent training.
