The Avianca LifeMiles Visa Signature® Card From US Bank usually comes with a 20,000 LifeMiles bonus with your first purchase. They’ve now increased this and the offer is now as follows:

The card comes with all of the same benefits it usually comes with (6,000 extra LifeMiles on card anniversary, 50% off excess baggage on Avianca flights).

How Useful Are LifeMiles?

You can view the full award chart here (warning it’s a touch confusing when you first look at it). These miles let you fly one way for 50% of the miles listed as well, which is great for those not flying in a regular round trip fashion. 40,000 miles is enough for the following:

  • Round trip flight within North America (25,000 miles)
  • Round trip flight from North America to Mexico (35,000 miles)
  • Round trip flight from North America to the Carribean (35,000 miles)
  • Round trip flight from North America to the North of South America (40,000 miles, Colombia, Venezula, Peru, Ecuador)

One thing I love about LifeMiles is that there are no fuel surcharges and they are part of the one world alliance. Most people value points at about 1.5¢ per point (Avianca regularly sells points at this price point) which would make this deal worth $600.

Our Verdict

Personally I’ll be giving this card a miss for now, I earn enough miles through work to not need to worry about them for my vacations. For those who regularly fly to South America, Caribbean or Mexico this is an easy way to get a free return flight.
