[Update] Barclay Cards No Longer Earning Points With Plastiq?

[Update 9/10/20: Reader E also reports not getting rewards for a 9/1/20 charge, but then the same payee did get rewards for a 9/7/20 charge. So my best guess at this point is that it was a one-day glitch and all cards/payments should hopefully earn rewards going forward.]

A reader sent in a tip that their Barclaycard Miles & More Mastercard stopped earning points for payments on Plastiq since August 30/31. On August 24 were earned, but sometime between then and August 31st there seems to have been a change with Barclays possibly no longer awarding points for Plastiq payments (or at least mortgage payments on Plastiq – there might be specific coding at play here).

To be clear, no cash advance fees are charged, so this isn’t something that Plastiq needs to notify us about. But it’s obviously of huge importance for those using Barclay cards on Plastiq.

They showed me screenshots of the change. Initially I thought it might have been too recent to award points or too close to closing, but that does not appear to be how Barclays historically works.

It’s still just one data point and not entirely confirmed. Please contribute any data points of recent Barclay-Plastiq usage in the comments below and hopefully we’ll be able to confirm one way or another.

The only other card issuer I’m aware of who does with thing with not charging cash advance – but also not awarding points – is Alliant, which we noted in our Plastiq review. I’ll add Barclays there if this info gets confirmed by more readers.

[Update 9/6/20: Two reports in the comments indicate that Barclay cards are, in fact, still earning rewards. It might be that only mortgage payments are not earning rewards or perhaps the reader who did not earn rewards is an anomaly.]
