Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
This account has a $12 monthly fee, this is waived if you do either of the following:
- Receive a direct deposit of $500 or more
- Have an average daily balance of $1,500 or more
Early Account Termination Fee
They used to charge a $25 fee if closed within 180 days of account opening, but looks like that isn’t charged anymore. Accounts must be open at the time of bonus posting
Our Verdict
Doesn’t seem to be targeted like previous bigger bonuses for $400/$600 and also is for the easier account to keep fee free. The downside is that obviously this is significantly smaller than those bonuses. As we normally recommend doing the $200 bonus anyway we will still add this to our best bank bonus page.

DP/Warning: opened account with 50/10, got flagged by fraud and account closed without notice, and customer service couldn't close out the account via phone or even tell me what I could do to resolve the issue.
I submitted a complaint via CFPB, and their response was to tell me to go visit a branch in-person and that they broke their own terms of service by not sending me a written notice when they closed my account. Their terms of service also said they'd mail me a check upon account closure, which they didn't.
I visited one branch in-person, and the branch manager promised to close out my account and mail me a check, but they failed to do so, and they didn't let me know. While I was waiting for that check, I got charged a service fee for an account that I literally couldn't access in any way. I went to another branch after that and the branch manager made scans of my driver's license and closed out my account but still couldn't refund the fee, so all this trouble resulted in a net loss of $12 along with all the time wasted.
YMMV but I'm not touching these guys with a ten foot pole in the future.

12/31/2020 - Signed Up for Bright Banking Checking account. I did person-to-person transfers, as I heard that was coding for a direct deposit. Unfortunately, BB&T (both corporate and my local branch) rejected this and said I did not meet the requirements. I closed my account today with no bonus. : (

Does anyone know if you can open new accounts with BB&T from out of footprint (OOF)/out of state (OOS) if you have an existing account and login? I opened checking and savings accounts in branch from OOS in Feb, got the $300 bonus, and now am ready to close but am wondering if I should leave the Savings account open for future bonus opportunities.
Went to a branch in Tampa and was told I needed a targeted mailer letter. Will try at a diff branch today.
