The Fine Print

  • You must be a new BBVA Compass consumer checking customer who has not had a BBVA Compass consumer checking account open within the last 90 days or closed due to negative balance to be eligible for the bonus.
  • Eligible accounts include BBVA Compass ClearChoice Interest Checking, BBVA Compass ClearChoice Free Checking, Clearconnect Checking, and Easy Checking.
  • Eligible accounts for residents of AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL, NM, TX include BBVA Compass ClearChoice Free Checking, BBVA Compass ClearChoice Interest Checking, ClearConnect Checking, and Easy Checking.
  • Only BBVA Compass ClearChoice Interest Checking and ClearConnect Checking are eligible accounts for residents of all other states.
  • Offer is valid for accounts opened in branch, online, or by phone
  • Within sixty (60) days of account opening, at least one electronic direct deposit from an unrelated 3rd party (e.g. your employer or a government agency) in the amount of at least $300 must post to the new checking account.
  • The $200 cash bonus will be deposited into the new checking account within 60 days of meeting the bonus requirements described above. The account must be open with a positive balance at the time the bonus is deposited.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

If you live in AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL NM or TX then the best account to open is the BBVA Compass ClearChoice Free Checking as this has no monthly fees to worry about. Otherwise open the Clearconnect checking account which also has no monthly fees to worry about. There is a $3 fee on ClearConnect for paper statements, so make sure you opt for paperless statements.

Early Account Termination Fee

Account needs to be kept open for 12 months otherwise they reserve the right to deduct the bonus.

Our Verdict

Bonus definitely worth doing, they have had lots of $200 bonuses recently but they have required going in branch in specific states. This is the first one that can be done nationwide and is also available online. Because of that I will be adding it to our list of the best checking account sign up bonuses. It’s always nice to have a credit card funding available as well, but people have reported a lot of issues with this in the past. As always share your experiences in the comments below.

  • I received a promotion email, possibly targeted. The subject is "We want to give you $25." It says "We noticed that you haven't taken advantage of your BBVA Compass checking account of late...Simply bring your checking balance to $100 by September 21st, and, if you still have $100 in your account on November 21st, we'll deposit $25 in your account within 90 days." The odd thing is I have exactly $100 in my account, so presumably if I do nothing they'll give me $25.

  • How did I miss it? :(
I might open an account just for credit card funding option.

  • BBVA DP:

6/4/18 opened a savings account and successfully funded with US Bank Premium Rewards Visa for max $500 allowed. Posted as a purchase

  • Account opened in November, met requirements and bonus didn't post. I followed up by calls and secure message. I filed a CFPB complaint and also sent a secure message saying I was filing complaint. Bonus posted few days after that

  • So random question, has anyone tried closing before the 12 months and had them try and claw back the bonus?

    • Not worth trying. The account is free... just leave $20 in there and let it ride. Use Mint or something similar to monitor the lack of fees or activity and then close in a year.

To DoC: I have a very sad DP to report. I believe BBVA Compass is no longer accepting CC funding. Tonight I tried to open both a CD and Money Market account and the only option to fund was ACH or internal transfer at BBVA. I am hoping it is just temporary, but I predicted $5K credit card funding would be lowered and go away. Sometimes I hate it when I am right. When I opened my checking months back, CC funding was denied by the CC, but was able to fund a Savings later. I wanted just one more taste to finish the spend on a Visa that needs a bite. I "saved" my application and will try again Monday. Maybe the CC machine is broken on the weekend?

        • Looking through different comments above, CC funding is apparently only available to Savings and Checking accts. It's not something new. False alarm - Oops.

          • Cancelled the apps for the BBVA CD & Money Market. Opened a 2nd savings. However, only allowed a max of $500 CC funding. Disappointing. Not sure if that's the same for "new customers" or not. Never got a response to my e-mail, so I guess they are blowing me off. Overall, not great. Probably took 3 EWS inquires and only did $500 MS for my $3.5K MSR.

NFCU Visa Flagship Rewards showing $500 as a purchase. I have a $0 CA limit. Not sure why, because I didn't ask them to lower my CA limit - that's the way it arrived. But I have a 16K CL. Not worried, but thought it was odd.

          • I filed a CFPB complaint for not receiving the bonus. I opened the account on the 20th and got the CC funding declined. Finally I was able to fund it on the 25th. After checking with customer service couple of times and bonus not posting, I filed the complaint. Finally they responded and apologized for the poor communication and posted the bonus on the 19th of this month.

        • Maybe. They wouldn't offer it if they didn't want people to use it, so I put an e-mail into the bank to see if Credit Card Funding is disabled, or down. I imagine I will get a response tomorrow. Really hope it's just a temp. glitch.

    • Tommy, do you know if the deadline was extended beyond 11/20 if you applied on 11/23 and got the bonus? I applied on 11/29, the link was still active, but I can't remember if there was a hard cut off or if I'll end up getting the bonus.

    • Tommy, do you remember if the deadline was extended past 11/20 if you were able to apply on 11/23 and get the bonus? I applied on 11/29, the promotion link was still available, but I'm not sure they're going to honor it if was past the date. I just can't remember.
