[Beta] Lyft Introduces All-Access Plan, 30 Free Rides Up To $15 After Paying $200 Membership Fee

Update 05/10/2018: According to TechCrunch Lyft has settled on the pricing of $200 for 30 free rides up to $15 each. If a ride is under $15 it will be free and one ride will be used (no rolling the remainder over). If a ride is above $15 then pass holders will receive a $15 discount. Regular Lyft users will receive an invite to join the waitlist starting from today (will show up as a notification bar in app). This has the potential to be $450 in savings (if you take 30 rides of $15 or more) for $200. Your average ride needs to be over $6.67 if you take 30 rides to break even.

 

Lyft is launching a new beta program called ‘All-Access Plan’. The idea is that you pay a monthly membership fee and receive all your standard Lyft rides (up to a maximum of $15). The offer one reader received was as follows:

  • Pay $250 each month
  • Receive your standard Lyft rides (up to $15 per ride) for free
  • Maximum of 30 free rides per month

Best case scenario you pay $250 and get $450 in rides. That’s not a fantastic deal, especially if you consider not all 30 rides will hit the $15 per ride cap. If a ride is over $15, then it basically just applies a $15 discount and you’re charged the amount over $15. You need your average ride to be over $8.5 to come out ahead. Uber offers a similar program called Uber Plus Pass. The value proposition of that pass has been much better though where you’d pay a fee of $10-$20 and then get discounted rides (either a 10 or unlimited ride cap). The problem with Uber Plus Pass is that the passes have been too good a value and have sold out extremely quickly making it next to impossible for most users to get a pass.

Update: Another reader received the same plan, but the cost was $199. Looks like they are split testing different pricing plans to see what sticks.

  • In Atlanta and I got an offer of 30 rides for $299. I only use Lyft or Uber 2 or 3 times a month, but even if used it more often, $300 up front doesn't seem like that great of a deal to only possibly save 33 percent.

  • If this was $200 for 30 anytime rides, I’d probably bite. But there’s no way I can do 30 rides in a month.

  • I'm seriously thinking of selling my car and buying this membership.
    We don't drive much being in the city and my car insurance itself is about $2000/yr and with gas, maintenance and other fees we'll come out ahead.

  • This would be good as an annual plan, not monthly, for me. It would actually be profitable that way for me. Otherwise, I just buy the gift cards from amazon using discounted Amazon GCs, or take advantage of their email offers that I get once in a while that give discounts up to $5 per ride.

    • You mean $200 annually? Or $2,400 annually? I mean obviously $200 annually would be fantastic...

      • $200 annually. Obviously it would give you a longer period of time to ride the 30 rides.

        • Ah, I thought you meant still 30 rides per month lol. Yeah I guess Lyft want this to be for frequent users

  • I am guessing longer rides you could do two $15 trips? Although that would be a hassle...
