Our Verdict
You need to use the $50 within 30 days of signing up. We often see the membership price decreased to $25, this is a better deal if you can use the full $50 within 30 days.

Can the $50 be used towards gas? Or is that typically excluded from such deals?
I mean, what's better than joining BJ's for free? Great deal.
You really shouldn't be on the fence (those who wish to compare CostCo and BJ's) with this deal. I can get if you are on the fence between paying for the two, but if you have CostCo and can get BJ's for free, why not?
But for those who are interested, just my take on the comparison between the two (long time BJ's member, this past year I was a first time CostCo member with the Groupon deal):
1) Parking - BJ's is much better. CostCo is always crowded, every hour of the day.
2) Gas - slightly better with BJ's. The lines are the same, the arrangement is the same (all enter in one location, all exit another location), the prices are the same discount. However BJ's seems to have gas deals that are unbeknownst to me. I'll open my app and see that I have 10-20 cents to use at BJ's gas on top of the lower price because I purchased some items which enable the discount. One big side note about BJ's, though, is that not all locations offer gas.
3) Store comfort - BJ's big time. CostCo has thinner lanes and so many more people. BJ's has wider lanes and fewer people. Checkout is a crazy mess at CostCo, BJ's is calm and orderly. BJ's also has organization to the store by food type with aisles that are property identified like a grocery store. CostCo is one big smorgasbord of items.
4) Big brand items - BJ's. CostCo focuses more on their Kirkland brand, so if you want more big brands selections, you'll more often only find them at BJ's (e.g. box of 48 bags of M&M's, or box of 36 kit kats, etc.).
5) Generic brand - CostCo. BJ's has Berkley Jensen and CostCo has Kirkland. I've read about Kirkland and how they have strict requirements on quality, not to mention that they are usually fulfilled by the big brand names in secret. Berkley Jensen is pretty...eh.
6) Coupons - BJs. BJ's gives you so many coupons which you access via the app. They also accept manufacturer coupons.
7) Payment - BJs. CostCo is limited to VISA. BJ's allows all cards.
8) Locations - CostCo. BJ's is only on the east coast. CostCo is everywhere.
9) Shipping - CostCo. BJ's used to have free shipping, now its gone. CostCo has free shipping with minimum spend. Sadly shipping is baked into most CostCo non-tech items wherein it behooves you to buy in store.
10) Technology - CostCo. Great return policy. Good prices online. Good selection.
11) Miscellaneous household goods - CostCo. Some quality items, like pillows, sheets.
12) Meat/Poultry/Fish - CostCo. CostCo has prime beef (BJ's doesn't). Some quality selections for various animals. CostCo will routinely have bigger sizes at better prices, e.g. smoked salmon.
13) Fruits and vegetables - equal. Only difference I've found is the size. For example, BJ's sells Dole bell peppers as a bag of 6, CostCo has the same as a bag of 8, with the same cost per unit.
14) Bakery - equal. I don't see one as better than the other.
15) Fast food - CostCo. BJ's has phased out the fast food stuff (no pizza, hot dogs, etc.)
16) Alcohol - CostCo. If I'm not mistaken you can enter in the alcohol area without membership at CostCo.
17) Deli - BJ's, big time. BJ's has a dedicated deli where you can get sliced meats.
18) App - BJ's. There are coupons and you can see the live prices of everything in store, as well as store stock. CostCo is limited to just buying stuff for shipping. I love going to CostCo with the BJ's app and comparing prices of meat & poultry to see which is better to buy.
Can the $50 cash rewards be used online?
for the record BJ's rotisserie chicken is much better than Costco's
One has to enroll in the autorenewal and authorize them to charge your card. If one opt out later, will they take the $50 back?
Why isn't Amazon buying Bjs already?
The offer says "cash rewards." Are the rewards a cash credit (e.g. spend $50 and get $50 knocked off) or are the rewards discounts on multiple items (e.g. get $10 off $20 of X, $20 off $30 of Y and $20 off $40 of Z) which is also a $50 reward?
The link says a $50 reward is added to your account. Which I take to mean one $50 off.
I joined on the $25 offer 1 day before this posted and I still think that's a better deal after looking at the BJ's selection and prices. If you can choose between the three, I'd definitely pay for Costco, then do a Sam's free membership deal stacked with a chase offer, then get the $25 BJ's if they have a tire you want that Costco/Sam's doesn't carry. I signed up to try out the tire center because they have the tires I want in stock and my friends said their warranty service is really good.
Not a comment on this offer. Obviously, it's a great offer, and thanks for finding it and posting it. But, BJs calls itself a warehouse store like Costco. But, it's a mini mart compared to a Costco. A fifth of the size, with a fifth of the stuff. All at higher prices. Sale booklets with items that don't exist and never exist in the store. Coronavirus spreading crowding. People trying to cut in line. One opened a half hour walk from me, and, after the excitement that something good was opening, what a disappointment when I actually walked in. And, Costco has wonderful customer service. BJs the opposite. If there was a Costco around, I can't imagine anyone going here.
I agree but it’s the only option in my area. :( At least they do pickup, so I don’t have to go in. I just get deals like this so I don’t have to pay for membership and I do pick up for the few things that are cheaper there.
This offer is probably more relevant to MS/churning than it is to mainstream warehouse customers buying groceries and stuff. But yeah, there's a reason Sam's Club and the unfortunately named BJ's keep offering free trial memberships through mail coupons. They just can't hold a candle to Costco, not even with their gas stations.
I live in an area that has all three, and there's normally no reason to ever to go to the other two.
I don't drive, but gas station? Tires (someone else mentioned)? I don't see them anywhere. Considering the small store size, if they actually had those, where would they have room for anything else?
The gas station and auto centers aren't actually inside the main warehouse, and not every BJ's has them. For more details, please Google.
Can the reward be used for purchasing gift cards?
It is very possible if this is added to your account as a REWARD as opposed to being mailed to GIFT CARD. In the past I received a physical BJ's gift card, but the language here implies a REWARD, which from my experience means that when you go to check out you will be presented with an option on the computer screen to utilize the reward to discount your purchase.
My pessimistic gut says no but be the DP you want to see. Costco and Sam's have much better GC deals anyways.
BJs used to have good HD deals from time to time.
