BREAKING: REDbird May Be Cash-Only Tomorrow

Dan’sDeals is reporting that REDcard loads will be cash-only starting tomorrow. It will be hard-coded to reject credit card loads. This is based on a memo which others reported and he saw himself.

I’m not surprised if this turns out to be true. I’ll try confirming it at my local Target and I’ll update this post if I see anything. The main reason we’re posting this unconfirmed report is so that all our readers could get in a $2,500 load today. That’s where I’m going now…

One big loss here is that those who had SoftServe won’t be able to go back to it with its higher debit/credit load limits since Softcard shut it doors recently. Most who got in on REDbird from the beginning will be happy they did so despite losing a little on the Serve end, but those who changed recently may end up losing in the long run.

Two big questions remain:

  • Will debit cards and PIN-enabled gift cards still work?
  • Will Amex For Target die along with REDbird. (This is a very important question in my opinion.) It technically shouldn’t, but it may get coded along with REDbird not to allow credit card loads.

UPDATE: See FrequentMiler’s post Confirmed: REDbird credit card loads will not be allowed as of May 6, 2015

  • Oh, I can't believe it. Just when I became aware of how I could finally obtain one of the RBs not being in a participating city.

Please, AFT, don't change! It's about all I got left!!!

  • Nooooo.... I just switched 15 days ago.. Lol...I wished switching earlier would have been better, I hate Walmart anyways. I don't want to go back to Serve.. I hope VGCs work at Target.

  • Is it affecting all the Target locations? Redbird is not sold in most of the states. So I guess we can still load in a Target which doesn't sells Redbird?

    • I don't think so. Reports of hard-coded rejection are coming from everywhere.

  • Data point: Los Angeles, Westwood.
    Result:
    1. Successfully loaded both CC($1000) and VGC(10*$100).

    2. Asked the customer service, they said they didn't receive anything about the shutting down of CC reload. But they set their daily limit to 2K/day.

  • I called customer service today, and they assured me that starting tomorrow, cash and debit card only, no gift card loading, so what should we do now? Should we transfer to blue bird?

  • Data point: whereas at lunch time the Target near work would only let me load vgc's using PIN, I just went to another Target on the way home and cc's still worked there.

So... the rumors that this may be branch by branch could be true. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

  • Got my full loads in on two cards today in a non-redbird city and the cashiers knew what was up. They've been seeing a surge all day. Bigger question is whether we can still load with debit cards. Would much rather prefer to drain debit enabled VGC/MGC's at Target than Walmart.

      • Nah. That's a different function entirely facilitated by amex and wouldn't be changed as lightly as this.

  • Just reloaded at target in NYC, talked to store manager. Yup, that's right, today is the last day you can load with CC, enjoy.

  • I just now 5/5/2015 5:30pm CST in Houston, TX did 3 loads of .. $1000, $1000 and $500 with no problem at all.
