• Just bought a bunch to finish hitting the 5th night free limit. Was barely missing 60k after hitting 2 SUBs for the hilton cards.

• I tend to buy, as I always use them in Mexico at Conrad Punta Mita , 95 K points but cash rate $1.500 / night during the Christmas season. And I have used them at Walford in Cabo, 120 K points but cash rate is insane

• I've got a brand new Amex-Hilton points credit card, just starting to work towards the 100,000 points bonus. I haven't yet figured out all the intricacies, so does anybody know if purchasing points with this promo via points.com will also generate 3x per dollar in points from Amex? (Would this be considered an "eligible purchase" by Amex?) That might make the numbers work a little better. Thanks.

  • Which card is it? In general though, buying points is considered eligible unless Amex considers it a cash equivalent which hasn't happened to me before.

• I always think it’s funny how many people complain about Hilton points being worthless. It’s easily the most valuable hotel program for me. Yall gotta do your research

  • I have over 100k Hilton points lying around for almost 2 years. Hyatt points are worth way more and I don't feel comfortable dropping 40-50k points per night compared to 8-10k points a night

    • It depends on where you go. There are way fewer Hyatt program locations than Hilton program locations. When traveling through many medium-sized (or even smaller) towns, you're much more likely to find Hilton hotels than Hyatt hotels.

      And every hotel program's points are a completely different value. So you can't compare point values arbitrarily between different programs, only compare them to what it costs you to get those points in the program they're for.

      Given that I mostly travel to photograph nature locations like state and national parks, I rarely get a chance to use my Hyatt points, I already have enough trouble sometimes figuring out where to use my annual Hyatt free night from my Hyatt credit card, given that the places I stay at most often have no Hyatt hotels near them.

    • Hyatt is better for low end redemptions or less than 15k points.

      Hilton and Hyatt are both good for high end redemptions or greater than 90k and 30k points respectively.

• The most devalued points out there! Rather pay cash and not deal with these gimmicks.

• They are worth only 0.03 cents at max

  • I've literally never spent less than .5 cents+ per point in my life, and that's before the 5th night free. Where are y'all blowing these points?

    • It's not as simple as where you're using them, it's also how you're comparing them.

      At many Hilton family hotels, there is only one points rate, but there are lots of different paid rates to compare to for the same stay.

      I just looked at one hotel where the points rate is 50000 points for next Tuesday night, and paid rates range from $156 for members' Semi-Flex rate to $233 for a rate called The Menu to Love, and a bunch of other rates in between, with most other discounted rates at $160.

      Not all Hilton family hotels have this big a range of paid rates, but if this one does, maybe some have an even bigger range of paid rates?

      People may be choosing different paid rates for comparison, because for example they don't pay attention to the cancellation differences or benefits differences between those different paid rates and the redemption rate.

      And some people do the calculation with taxes and fees included and other people don't include taxes and fees in the calculation..

      Also: Hilton rounds points, but doesn't round rates. So points rates don't track paid rates precisely, even when they track them somewhat.

      Plus there are a small handful of Hilton family hotels (a vary small minority) which have capped rates, that don't change depending on the cost.

      So for all of these reasons, there's can't be one exact points-to-miles rate. Of course, there can be one rate that you use for your comparison, but everyone can come up with a different rate for themselves depending, not only based on where they stay on points, but also based on their methodology for calculating the rate.

• I value hilton point 0.001 cent or 5 points per a cent.
  Most standard Hilton cheapest room that cost $100 a night cost 50000 to 80000 points a night. the only time it would make sense to buy hilton point is if it is 160K point for $300 max. lets not paint a rose picture.

  • That is true for some hotels, but there are many hotels where Hilton points are worth 0.5c/pp or more. I have had some redemptions where each Hilton point was worth 0.6-0.7c/pp.

    Usually the more high-end and expensive the property, the better the point redemption becomes.

    And there are a couple properties where it goes up to even 1.3c/pp, if not more, but with limited redemptions.

  • dont tell me you paid more than $300 for 160k that is good for 2 nights standard room at hampton inn

    • uhmmm you can go to conrad’s in japan for 75-90k a night, whereas you paid cash i’d be $1500

    • I purchased 290k hilton points for a 5 night booking in Paris for next summer for $1450 and it was an amazing deal (the 5 night was free)

      Hotel rate cash: $730
      Comparable hotel: $400

      As a diamiond member I get free breakfast and possible upgrades

      We love hilton, might buy 480k points for $2,400 for a 5 night booking in the Maldives which in cash will be around 5k-8k

      • Finally some people who can do math. A lot of folks in the wrong hobby based on these comments.

    • You realize people can use them for higher end Hilton properties that gives way more value to Hilton points, right? 160k can cover nearly two stays at certain Waldorf Astoria, which are ~$1k/night. Not to mention the 5th free night when booking with points if you have status.

      • It doesn't even have to be crazy redemptions - Hilton points can work out just fine redeeming in a typical resort destination like Hawaii. When every property is going to charge 15%+ tax and many have resort fees the waiving of taxes and fees on rewards stays also leads to good value.

      • I think this is such a terrible take, one that's often peddled by the travel hacking/bank advertising community. I'm not going to base the value of Hilton points because it can give me great value for a hotel that is $1000. That's not a price I would ever consider paying for a hotel out of pocket, especially if there are hotels in the area for much less. If Hilton sells their points at 0.5 cents each, it means it's worth less than that. My personal valuation is Hilton points are worth 0.35 cents each.

        • Crazy for you to think that other people dont want to stay in a nicer hotel compared to you.

    • For 160k points I can get two nights at really nice hotels, even weekends if booked far enough in advance. Obviously only redeem if saver awards are available. I average 0.7 cpp with Hilton.

• Hilton points are SO worthless. At least locally like 30-40k points for a shit-tier hotel that would cost $100 or 7-10k marriot points, .2 cpp or something like that

  • Agreed, I don't understand why ppl paint a rosy picture of hilton points. Marriott devalued couple of times their points but it;'s still worth it in higher markets like we stayed in Anchorage, and also tertiary markets. Hilton on the other hand, asking 70K lol for a 136$/nightly rate.

    Which w astoria going for 1000$/night are we looking at that is worth converting these points for? Genuinely asking as I'm interested.

  • I'm with you. But this is not a bad deal for for high-tax locations that also charge daily resort fees (both waived on awards), especially if you're planning a 5-night stay (5th night on points is free if you hold any Hilton status or credit card). YMMV. For example, I used purchased points most recently to get a 400$ per night Embassy Suites family room (after all taxes and fees, go figure!) for less than 250$ a night (fully flexible rate) on a 5-night stay. At that level of cash savings, I don't even care about foregoing Honors points earned on paid stays.
