Update: At least one reader was denied due to 5/24. Looks like this doesn’t bypass the rule.
Recently the Chase mobile app started displaying credit card offers in a banner at the top of the app (see image below). A lot of readers have been asking if this will by-pass the Chase 5/24 rule like in branch pre-approvals and website ‘selected offers for you’ do.
The short answer is that I don’t have any hard datapoints that suggest this does or doesn’t bypass the rule. I suspect it’ll be treated as a regular application and the rule will still apply for the following reasons:
- The APR is a range rather than fixed. This generally means no pre-approval or checking process has been done.
- One reader that applied received a message that stated more time was needed to review the application.
If anybody does apply in app, please let us know if you were able to get around the rule or not in the comments below.

Im kinda new to credit.... I was a little nervous about accepting the offer as I have over 10 accounts within 1 year. So the 5/24 is an underwritten rule that is very difficult to understand.
After speaking with 3 different CS reps, they all was not able clarify the rule. One of them actually never heard of this rule. There was lots of information that made me very reserved.
Anyways, I took a deep breath and hit the "SUBMIT" button.... And....

CONGRATULATIONS!! YOU'RE APPROVED.
So here's what I recommend:
1. Look at your personal credit profile
2. If you believe that your credit is in tact... no derogs, utility below 30%, no lates, and few inquires within the last 1 year. And...
3. If you okay with a Hard Pull
Do it!
I can also confirm that if the offer appears under "Selected for you" it overrides the 5/24 rules. I am 9/24 and I was just approved for the CSP. Thanks Doc, I'd have waited until under 5/24 before applying if I hadn't seen this post :)
I can confirm that this overrides 5/24. I am WAY over 5/24 but was approved for CSP last week when I applied via in app offers.
My "Selected For You" offer in the mobile app was Chase Business - Get a Virtual Terminal. Not what I was hoping for :-)
Betteridge's law of headlines: "Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no."
Don't think we actually know for sure yet, I haven't seen any hard data points.
I have a Freedom offer on the banner in the app. All three of my reports are frozen, so I assume it is marketing (at least in my case).
I just checked and it gave me an offer for CSP. I already got a CSP 12 months ago. This is just an ad
I’m at around 7/24 and was denied for my first card with Chase (UA Explorer 70k offer) about 3 weeks ago when I applied online via a dummy booking on united.com. I have CSR, CSP, Freedom, Checking, mortgage & auto loan. I’m wondering if I can go into a branch and ask for a pre-approval, apply, get approved and then request via SM to match to the superior online offer? Are there any DPs on this?
That will work, but the problem is you are unlikely to have a pre-approval in branch. If you are pre-approved, they generally will match a better offer with SM. But the odds of having a pre-approval, only in branch, especially if you didn't 3 weeks ago are very low.
Thanks for answer @ Jason.
Update: I stopped by a local branch and the banker said I was not pre-approved for the UA Explorer card, but was showing offers for a few others. She explained that they cannot see pre-approval offers for co-branded cards or as of recently the CSR. She said I could still apply for the Explorer but I told her I'd think about it and possibly return at a later date. I tend to have more trust in DPs on FT/DOC/BA blogs versus what the banker told me (haha!). I was hoping to see a DP of someone that was declined for a co-branded card via online app, applied and approved via in branch application, and then matched via SM.
No personal experience, but I know a recent post that contradicts her statement - that they can show United Pre-Approvals in branch:
https://www.doctorofcredit.com/know-chase-branch-pre-approvals-show-united-cards/
I was told today by banker that only 4 Chase Branded cards preapproval are given in bank (Freedom, FU, CSP and CSR).
Yes united will show, other cobrands not.
I don't see any reason why the offers in the app would be different than the ones on the website. I actually see many technical reasons for it to NOT be different.
I dont see ANY offer on the public OFFERS FOR YOU page but see them in-app and within the chase login only .
Personally i always find the public offers quite generic
I should also let people know that targeted emails as well as traditional mailers do not bypass 5/24 either (wasted a pull). Appears only in-branch pre-approvals are able to do so.
