Chase Expands ‘Pay Yourself Back’ To Ink Cards & Extends Until April 30, 2021

As rumored Chase has extended the popular ‘Pay Yourself Back’ program until April 30, 2021. In addition Chase business Ink cards are now eligible for the program (October 1 – December 31).

  • Chase Ink Business Preferred/Business Plus: Points are worth 25% more (1.25¢) towards selecting online advertising and shipping purchases and contributions made to eligible charitable organizations. This is valid from October 1 until December 31, 2020.
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred: Points are worth 25% more (1.25¢) towards grocery and home improvement stores, dining at restaurants, including takeout and delivery services and contributions to eligible charitable organizations. This is valid through April 30, 2021
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve: Points are worth 50% more (1.5¢) towards grocery and home improvement stores, dining at restaurants, including takeout and delivery services and contributions to eligible charitable organizations. This is valid through April 30, 2021
  • Chase Freedom/Freedom Unlimited/Freedom Flex: Points are worth 25% more (1.25¢) towards contributions made to eligible charitable organizations. This is valid from October 1.

Great to see that the Sapphire cards are keeping the strong categories until at least April next year, I’m somewhat surprised to see that.

  • Does anyone know if purchasing gift cards at a grocery card will qualify for the Pay Yourself Back bonus?

  • Searched but seems can’t find it anywhere — What is the maximum total amount of points that can be redeemed with the PayYourselfBack (Per monts, or in total until April 30)? Sitting on a large balance and would like to redeem the max. TIA

  • Do Venmo p2p transactions still code as Office & Shipping on CIP? I've hit the SUB and stopped using my CIP, but it would be worth dusting off and using on Venmo again if that can count for 1.25 cpp.

  • Has anyone redeemed transactions made after Oct 1st?

Chase has not officially announced the extension. There is no press release like when it first announced the feature. All info we have so far are from various blogs which basically repeat the same info from one single source.

  • If there is a negative balance after the statement credit can you ask Chase to send a check?

  • Do we know where to find official T&Cs of the program? I have been abroad for some time and would like to use Ink card for shipping services (German DHL and local post office). Are also foreign transactions eligible?

  • I just signed up for the Chase Sapphire Preferred 80,000 bonus. Would it be possible to wait for the bonus to post, upgrade the card to the Reserve for a few months, cash out a bunch of points at 1.5x and then downgrade back to the Preferred a few months later? Or is this a bad idea for some reason I'm not thinking of?

    • You generally can't product change until the card is 12 months old, so the timing doesn't work. It seems likely that Pay Yourself Back will still be around in some form this time next year, though, and you'd get an extra $200 return on 80,000 points at 1.5x vs 1.25x, which covers the $150 annual fee difference (assuming you consider the $300 travel credit as cash).

    • @guest_1064571 I don't think they'll let you upgrade the card in the first year. If you have an existing Freedom or Freedom Unlimited card that's been open for over a year, you can product change it to a CSR to cash out the points at 1.5c each.

      • I can't upgrade though, if I already have the Preferred, correct? (i.e. my understanding is you can't hold 2 Sapphire cards at the same time, correct?). I could get player 2 involved though (who doesn't have any Sapphire cards), and have them upgrade a Freedom card to the Reserve (and transfer UR points to them for redeeming). Would they eventually be able to downgrade back to the Freedom Flex, for example, and still qualify for a Sapphire bonus (by opening a new card), if they've never received one? Upgrading the Freedom to a Reserve isn't too appealing if it prevents a future sign-up bonus from being earned.

        • Yes you can upgrade a Freedom to a CSR while holding CSP. Usual caveats apply, Freedom needs to have been opened for 12+ months and you need $10K CL to upgrade to CSR, which you can transfer from an existing personal card if you need to.

        • @guest_1064571 You can have 2 Sapphire cards at the same time, you just can't get approved for a new Sapphire line of credit if you currently have a Sapphire card. So, upgrading a different card works.

Or yes, you can get P2 involved. They can upgrade to CSR, and downgrade at a later date. It won't affect their Sapphire bonus eligibility because the rule is 48 months between Sapphire bonuses, and no Sapphire bonus would be awarded from that upgrade.

          • @guest_1064553 Can you then downgrade CSR back to Freedom immediately?
Will 12-month rule apply, for the purpose of downgrading back?
            Thanks!

          • @guest_1070803 I think the 12-month rule is purely a CFPB-imposed rule that doesn't let card issuers charge upgrade fees in the first year a card (on a new credit line) is open. Beyond that rule, I think you can downgrade and upgrade whenever you'd like, but realize there's a chance that Chase won't like it.
