Chase Hyatt Bonus Changing To 40,000 Points (From Two Free Nights Anywhere) On June 29th

As rumored by Will Run For Miles yesterday and confirmed by OMaaT today Chase will be changing the sign up bonus on the Chase Hyatt card on June 29th, 2017 to 40,000 points after $2,000 in spend. Currently the card gives you two free nights at any Hyatt Hotel or resort worldwide (there is a better offer that includes a $50 statement credit). All other benefits of the card will be staying the same (including the 5,000 points for adding an authorized user).

To compare we need to look at the Hyatt award chart:

If you’re staying a category 6 property or higher you’re better off with the free night offer. If you stay at a category four property or lower your better off with the points offer. Category five you break even with either offer. There are two things to remember with the point offer:

The other thing to consider is that the free nights expire after twelve months and the points do not. It has been possible to turn those expired certificates into points but recently they seems to no longer work. Personally I prefer a points based offer, but I think the sweet spot for me is 50,000 points rather than 40,000. That’s because I tend to focus on lower category properties. I also find with free night certificates I make irrational choices to try and maximize my “value” of those certificates.

If you prefer the free nights bonus then make sure you get the one with the $50 statement credit. As always, make sure you read these things everybody should know about Chase before applying. For example this card does not fall under the Chase 5/24 rule.

  • I just got the 2 night one. I may SM them to switch to the 40,000 points offer. That works often with Chase.

  • Can you clarify when the stopwatch begins with regards to not having received the same Chase Hyatt bonus within the last 24 months - with the prior card approval date or the prior 2 night award date? Specifically, I applied and was approved for this card on June 9, 2015, and then had the 2 free nights bonus awarded to me on July 12, 2015. I then cancelled my card after a year and was looking to reapply once the 24 month period had passed. So, if I apply for this card in the coming days (before June 29th), but wait until after July 12, 2017 to spend the $2K and be awarded the 2 nights, will I have met the criteria than I need to wait 24 months? Or will I be deemed ineligible because I am applying for this card just shy of 24 months from when I actually had the 2 earlier bonus nights awarded to me?

  • Does anyone know if I will lose my unused chase hyatt anniversary night if I close my card? I received the bonus on this card about 26 months ago, so i'd like to close my card and sign up again before the 29th to get the 2 free nights before the offer goes away, But i have not yet used my free anniversary night that i just received 2 months ago.

    • No, you will not lose your anniversary night certificate. It will remain on your account until the expiration date.

  • You say the conversion of the anniversary night certificate may no longer be possible, but the latest data point you listed seems to be related to the two free nights, not the anniversary night.

That person's screenshot from Hyatt references "certificates" so it does not appear to be related to the anniversary night certificate (singular).

Therefore, I think you need to put an asterisk or remove it as a data point on the anniversary night certificate unless you can get better clarification.

  • I hope its not true because I subscribe to travelpointology plans and I am following the plan going to Paris, France and will soon apply for the Hyatt credit card for me and my husband so we can stay at the Park Hyatt Vendome for 5 nights for free. I think we will apply today to be sure we get the credit card with the two free nights just in case.

  • I currently have the Hyatt card with 2 free nights that I opened last year. Would I be to apply to this since it's a different product.

    • It's the same product. Why would it be different? Because it's a different signup bonus? That doesn't count, though we all wish :)

  • The 12 month expiration is what kept me from getting this card. Now more interested, but we usually only stay at lux properties on points so would be on this if it were 50,000 points bonus. Maybe in the future. We plan our points trips years in the future, so too many cards right now anyhow for our 5th free trip back to the South Pacific (no Hyatt there).

  • Wonder if the change in bonus will somehow activate 5/24 subjection. Hope not.

  • By the way Hyatt has some really nice hotels for just 5,000 a night.
A few months ago i transferred 10,000 chase UR to Hyatt and we had a nice two day weekend upstate new york in fishkill its less then 2 hours from the city and they have a hot tub, indoor pool, free breakfast, and pet friendly for just 5,000 points a night!
Its really good for a winter gateway.
