Our Verdict

Probably makes sense to just wait for an improved offer on the Chase IHG premier card as that has gone as high as 150,000 with the annual fee waived first year.

  • Wouldn’t this be a good offer if you only intend to use it for a free stay at an IHG hotel? 120,000 points must cover a couple of free nights? And no annual fee so can hold onto the points at no cost until used… I infrequently stay in some hotel when visiting family.

  • The write-up should mention that the T&C declare ineligible anyone currently holding *any* IHG personal card (Select, Traveler, Premier) OR who received a signup bonus in the last 24 months on *any* IHG personal card (Traveler, Premier).

This is much more restrictive than the general rule for Chase cards, where—except for CSP/CSR—each card is treated independently.

  • No annual fee at all And 3x on Utilities. Sign me up. What credit agencies does Chase go through....

    • US Bank CASH+: 5% Cashback on your choice of two categories. Categories include utilities, cell phone, and others. No annual fee, and includes cell phone insurance.
Much better than effectively 1.5% Cashback on utilities through this card.

      • They turned me down once saying I have too many cards, basically. May try again in a couple of months.

        • Although I like IHG points and tend to get fair value out of them, a classic 2% rewards card like the Citi Double Cash is generally going to deliver better value. (You can use your 2% in cash to buy points from IHG at $0.005 each a few times a year via Points.com if that's what you're really after).

  • Can you get this card if you currently have the grandfathered CHASE IHG card wit the $49 annual fee?

    • From the terms; This product is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of any personal IHG® Rewards Credit Card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of any personal IHG® Rewards Credit Card who received a new cardmember bonus for any personal IHG® Rewards Credit Card within the last 24 months.
      Sounds unambiguous to me.

    • Also denied another IHG card for having the old $49 version. Reject letter said I already had a card with them. Hoping for some DP's of a relaxed rule.

    • I have the grandfathered IHG card. I applied for a different IHG card and got turned down with the reason “you already have a card like this”. I waited a year and tried again in November. Got turned down again with the exact same reason. Not sure if they changed there rules or if they just don’t like me :)

      • It isn't you Nancy. Beltway's answer above is correct. The only way to stack the 10% point rebate benefit of your legacy IHG card the 4th night free of the new annual fee cards is to get the Business card.

    • I think so. I have the $49 AF card and the $89 AF card because they're separate products so I think this card is also a separate product. This card and the $89 AF card came out at the same time IIRC. However I've had the $89 AF card for I think 4 years now so not sure on current rules.

      • NOPE. The new rule as of last spring is you can’t get a new IHG personal card if you currently hold any IHG personal card (Select, Traveler, or Premier). Only the business card, which is also a Premier, is treated as a separate product.
