The Offer
- Chase has increased the sign up bonus on their Amtrak Guest Rewards credit card to 18,000 points if you spend $1,000 in purchases within the first three months.
The Fine Print
- Earns at following rates:
- 2x points on Amtrak purchases
- 1x points on all other purchases
- 5% point rebate on Amtrak travel redemptions
- No annual fee
Our Verdict
The normal bonus on this credit card is 12,000 points after $500 in spend, so this bonus is higher by 6,000 points but also needs an additional $500 in spend to trigger the bonus. The bonus on this card was as high as 32,000 points back in 2011.
I can’t imagine that Amtrak/Chase will increase the sign up bonus to 32,000 points again, at least not publicly. Some people have had success getting targeted offers for that bonus. There are two good uses of Amtrak points:
- Use them for an Amtrak trip.
- Transfer them to Choice points at a 1:3 ratio (this would make this bonus worth 54,000 Choice points).
The problem with transferring to choice points is that you need to spend $200 or more in a calendar year on Amtrak purchases to be able to transfer your points. Personally I’m going to give this offer a miss, if I ever used Amtrak then I might reconsider but I really don’t need the Choice points.
I’d like to do a longhaul Amtrak trip at some stage, but at the moment I probably don’t have the time. I also think it’s something that would be more fun to do with a family, so I’ll save that adventure for later in life. Can't you just buy a $200 amtrak ticket and then cancel it?
Isn't it best to always take a UR offer over this one, since URs transfer 1:1 to Amtrak? Even with the 5% redemption bonus, 18k is way less than other UR offers.
Some people have already done the UR offers, also if you did that you wouldn't get the ability to transfer to choice. That being said, I agree with you. For 99% of people they will be better off with the CSP or Chase Ink Plus.
Thanks for linking to my Amtrak posts, I also have Part 4: Bedrooms at Night, Showers, Parlour Car, and Movie Theater (http://travelwithgrant.com/2014/10/15/amtrak-coast-starlight-trip-part-4-bedrooms-showers-parlour-car-and-movie-theater/) and Part 5: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner in the Dining Car and Parlour Car (http://travelwithgrant.com/2014/10/15/amtrak-coast-starlight-trip-part-5-breakfast-lunch-and-dinner-in-the-dining-car-and-parlour-car/).
The 18,000 point sign up bonus doesn't sound that tempting to me, especially when all of the other Chase credit cards have 50,000+ point sign up offers.
Added those, the main reason I would consider it is for the transfer option to choice to be honest. I might just see if I can product change another Chase card to this instead.
What are your plans to complete the $200 Amtrak travel? I wonder if buying a $200 Amtrak Gift Card would qualify: http://www.amtrakvacations.com/rail_vacations/gift-cards/
Doesn't look like you can resell the Amtrak gift cards though? Not sure what I'd do or even if it's worth it. The more I think about it the less I like this plan of mine haha.
Does it say that you can't resell the gift cards? I would think Ebay would be an option.
I just don't sell them listed on GGC.
