Chase Sending Out 1099s For Referral Bonuses (1¢ Per Point)

Chase is sending out 1099 forms if you’ve referred somebody to a card and received a referral bonus. Chase is valuing points at 1¢ per point, Chase sent out 1099 forms for referrals last year as well. The main difference seems to be that this time Chase is sending out 1099 forms for people that received less than $600.

Update: Chase has also included promotions from Chase Pay as little as $15 as well and annual fee waivers of $95

  • Any reports on what is happening in 2023 for year 2022? Has anyone actually gotten 1099s for under $600 from Chase? I don’t mean account X had under $100, I mean your aggregate referrals total was under $600 and you still got a 1099.

  • FYI it looks like Chase is sending these 1099s out for 2020 now. Just got one in the mail today. Is there someway to see what it was for? Some people in the comments seem to imply they are claiming signup points as income and and not just referrals.

  • I had $400 in referrals last year and haven't received anything from them. It seems like they aren't sending them to some people for whatever reason.

    • +1. Received one 10k Hyatt referral bonus but no 1099. What's is the risk of them sending 1099 later?

    • So far I have only received a 1099 for myself for $5 (?) and one for a bank account bonus...and none for P2, but we should both have $400-$600 if they are counting referrals.

  • Finally got two 1099-MISC forms in the mail today from Chase -- $350 for SSN referrals and $600 for EIN referrals but both forms have my SSN listed as the tax id so I can file normally (won't have to report EIN referrals as separate EIN income)

    They sent both forms to my old address (moved over summer) so it took longer with USPS mail forwarding -- the EIN one I understand since I closed the card before moving, but the SSN cards were still active after moving so they have my current address on file.

    I also had 2x CFU referrals (2x $100) pending in Dec 2019, but they weren't available for use until Jan 2020 statement -- $200 for that isn't mentioned on the form so it looks like it'll count towards 2020 referrals instead

  • Does anyone know is these 1099-misc are going to be online or will you get them by snail mail?

  • I just got a $1000 1099-MISC from Chase Credit Card bonus/credits

    $100 - Freedom Unlimited - no activity on this card- not sure why this is reported.

    $100 - United Mileage Plus Explorer - I guess this is for the $100 Global Entry fee credit.

    $800 - Chase Ink Preferred - I thought the 80K UR signup bonus for $5K spend qualifies as a spend rebate tax free. There was no referral to anyone else last year;

    • This doesn't sound right. Did you get 3 1099-MISCs (one for each account). The signup bonus and global entry are definitely not taxable.
