The Offer

Weekly Ad

  • Dollar General stores are offering 15% off most gift cards on 12/10

The Fine Print

  • Valid 12/10 only

Our Verdict

Unfortunately Dollar General doesn’t say what gift cards are excluded. Some Dollar General are cash only for gift cards, others accept credit cards.

  • Uber, Starbucks, Chipotle, Taco Bell worked.

    Texas Roadhouse, Chick-fil-a did not.

I was able to convince them to use a credit card even though at first they said no.

      • I’m just using cash today, chase shut me down (9 cards) and all I have is Amex, can’t afford another shutdown right now.

        • No, I was using all my wife’s cards for purchases and transferring the points to my sapphire to cash out, basically showed me as unprofitable and my wife got dragged down with me.

          • Ouch, that sucks.

I’m curious, what language did they use on the phone/letter to state the reason for closing your accounts? I imagine they wouldn’t explicitly tell a customer they are unprofitable.

          • It took a few tries but a rep finally told me it was my point redemptions between the two of us. A side note was the lack of spend among all my cards, they didn’t care that it was during the height of lockdown so of course I wasn’t spending anything.

          • That's pretty crazy, it had to be high volume and obvious though? Can you say what your avg monthly spend/xfer was? I do something similar as well, but low volume (around $2k a month) never imagined it bringing a shutdown.

  • Just called my local DG (not that close to me so I didn’t want to drive). Lowe’s has a buy 2, get $5 off promo but is not part of the 15%. Mostly restaurants for the 15% except PlayStation and Uber/ubereats. Lowe’s is already sold out anyways.

    Debit and cash only.

    • I should have clarified that DG Markets code as grocery, not the normal retail versions, but both sell gift cards.

    • Think more DPs would be needed but no Chase cards are offering a higher percentage for grocery at this point, is there?

    • You'll be dead before that happens. Amex is more targeted towards higher income earners, they don't get much from Dollar General.

        • Because nearly everyone shops at Walmart and they have a partnership with them. "Nearly everyone" includes high income earners. That's why most credit cards target "groceries and gas" - because everyone uses them. It's an easy grab. Shopping at dollar stores in generally done by lower income people or if you happen to live close to one it's quicker to grab something small. It's certainly not a desired place everyone is thinking of buying something at. I can guarantee you aren't waiting for a sale on those $3 sandals or $2 christmas stockings.

        • The "typical" Walmart shopper earns $80k a year. I'm sure Amex has interest in that group of income earners.
