eBay Will Stop Accepting American Express Cards In August

eBay will stop accepting American Express cards in August due to their higher fees, Bloomberg reports. The change will be in effect on August 17th. In a statement, eBay cited, “unacceptably high fees.”

This is a big move, and honestly I’d say a hit to Amex. I’m surprised they couldn’t come to an agreement; maybe eBay was playing too much hardball.

  • If you have been strictly a buyer on ebay you have only seen the upside. As a seller Ebay has been a greedy pain for years tacking on fee after fee. If you operate on razor thin margins ebay will make sure you are in the negative within the next year. Funny how Amex is the deal breaker.

  • I really want to know who are those people that so desparately want to use an Amex everywhere when Visa and Mastercard have better cards in every category.

    • I pay $65,000 a year in shipping fees using my AmEx on eBay. I get 2% back. I'll switch to a Visa that gives me the same return, but I prefer AmEx because when I use said points for travel I receive an additional 35% back.

    • When people buy things where they want the superior protections that Amex offers.

    • Bonus whores like us that need to hit the required spend in order to qualify for a signup bonus.

  • I have not accepted amex for about 10 years at my business. They are awful to work with as a vendor, so is Amazon.

Everyone who has an Amex has a Visa or MC.

  • What's worse is the claim of August when I can't use an AMEX card today. Why doesn't AMEX just say "effective immediately?"

  • This is going to be a trend. Already seeing tons of merchants charging a fee to use a CC.

  • Can you still circumvent that with PayPal?

Or do they block that if it's your only card on there?

    • Haven't tried, but Paypal is a separate company now so it should work. Paypal will process the payment at its rate and EBay will invoice the seller the 10% commission.

This may affect rewards as Paypal may not code as 'online retailer'.

  • There goes my 3% cash back for this online retailer. Love that BCE has online retailers as a cashback option.

    • The way to do this is with a Chase Ink card. 5X on Office Supplies. Buy eBay gift cards at Staples, get 5X UR points on everything at eBay.

  • An eBay special discount code (suckitamex) to celebrate the break up would be nice.
