Equifax Launches Core Credit – Free Equifax Credit Report & VantageScore 3.0 Updated Monthly

Equifax has launched a new product called Core Credit, this product enables users to receive a free Equifax credit report and VantageScore 3.0 with both of these being updated monthly. Core Credit is available through myEquifax. myEquifax users need to opt into Core Credit to get the free score and credit report. myEquifax also lets users:

  • Manage a security freeze and fraud alerts
  • File a dispute

I can personally see a reason to have a myEquifax account (useful for freezing and unfreezing) but if you’re strictly after credit monitoring then I think there is a better solution. In terms of credit scoring, it’s better to stick with a FICO score as they are more commonly used by lenders than the VantageScore 3.0 but keep in mind there are a lot of different variations of the FICO score.

  • Always get a little sad when a new product offering Vantagescore comes out. Means more people get confused about their credit score since it's not FICO (I know, FICO has variants, but getting FICO 8 is close as you can know to the score they'll use).

  • We had already signed up my.equifax.com for credit freeze. Equifax sent an e-mail to only one of us with title "Your new myEquifax dashboard is here - check it out!".

Confusingly, in order to sign up Core Credit, you click on "Get my free credit score". It's also stated here under "MyEquifax":
    https://www.equifax.com/personal/education/credit/report/how-to-get-your-free-credit-report/

The e-mail also states: "By selecting Equifax Core Credit, you'll be getting a free credit score and Equifax credit report once a month, but no longer have access to two free annual reports". I suppose the difference is that "two free" allow you to get them anytime, but the monthly is only once a month (each report one month apart)?

Personal rant: These companies really like to make things confusing, besides the above:

First, when I followed the "better solution" link, instead of Freecreditscore.com, when I login usa.experian.com > My Profile > Membership, my product is "Experian IdentityWorks Basic". But I cannot easily compare it with other similar "products". Also, I only found "IdentityWorks Basic" referenced in an app description, but I am pretty sure I signed up on a website.

Second, one of the replies mentions Mastercard ID Theft Protection. But I have id-theft-alerts.mastercard.com. I finally figured out that id-theft-alerts.mastercard.com is the same as mastercardus.idprotectiononline.com, although when I clicked on "Login" on top, it says my old account is available until 12/31/2019 (so I need to create a new account before 12/31/2019?). But mastercardus.idprotectiononline.com is different from mastercardidps.idprotectiononline.com when I clicked on "Login", even though they are the same?

    • Found out more about Mastercard ID Theft Protection in a footnote. Here, even more confusion about "the" vs "a" in sentence: "at 'the' link provided in 'the' enrolled cardholder notices". It's the end of August, and I have never received any notice.

  • Why isn't both of your credit score shown when you get credit karma or another way to look at it

  • My "MyEquifax" doesn't have Core Credit section. It also says you can only get your credit report twice a year. How can I sign up for this specifically?

    • It literally says on the first page that you can access credit freezes and the Core Credit product. My.equifax.com

  • I don't see the point of signing up for this. Whenever I want a copy of the data Equifax have on me, I just log onto the Dark Web and retrieve it from there.
