I’m reposting this because all the recent datapoints we have say that opening an account with BBVA is now a soft pull. Because of that I know think this bonus is worth completing and have added it to our best bank bonus page.

The Offer
Direct link to offer: Florida | Alabama & Florida
- BBVA Compass is offering a bonus of $200 when you open a new checking account at any eligible branch and receive a qualifying direct deposit of at least $300 within 60 days of account opening. $25 opening deposit required and credit card funding isn’t allowed in branch so bring cash.
The Fine Print
- You must be a new BBVA Compass consumer checking customer who has not had a BBVA Compass consumer checking account opened within the last 90 days or closed due to negative balance to be eligible for the bonus.
Eligible accounts include BBVA Compass ClearChoice Interest Checking, BBVA Compass ClearChoice Free Checking, and Easy Checking. - Within sixty (60) days of account opening, at least one electronic direct deposit from an unrelated 3rd party (e.g. your employer or a government agency) in the amount of at least $300 must post to the new checking account.
- The account must be opened at one of the participating branches above or via 1-800-Compass, Option 2, with the account housed at a participating branch.
- We reserve the right to deduct the bonus amount if the account is closed within 12 months of opening.
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Easiest account to keep fee free is the BBVA Compass ClearChoice Free Checking account as this has no monthly fee to worry about.
Early Account Termination Fee
Account needs to be kept open for 12 months otherwise they reserve the right to deduct the bonus.
Our Verdict
I think this is a great bonus and worth opening if you live near a branch. The downside is obviously the in branch opening requirement, there are definitely better bonuses out there but if you’ve done those then this is also worth doing. They have also offered this in California & Colorado just recently, so I suspect it will be slowly making it’s way to all of BBVA’s branches.

I was asked about overdraft protection at account opening and I declined. Apparently that only means overdraft is turned off for "ATM transactions and everyday debit card transaction." After reading overdraft info on their website, it appears that they automatically turn on overdraft for "checks and other transactions." This can be turned off inside online banking.
Did anyone else have overdraft automatically added? This is def something I decline everywhere but I dont even recall seeing or talking about it. In my experience, this is usually a pretty noticeable acknowledgement area of the process. I told my banker i wanted to decline once we got the app setup on my phone but she kept insisting I can turn it off. Seems like the damage is already done though. Sales goals?
Not sure if it was Ally or Fidelity but one of em triggered the bonus.

I completed my account opening in the branch today. I was told by the banker that the promotion has been extended to the 25th
Called the number and was told by first rep that even if opening via phone, you would have to eventually have to go by branch to sign forms and present social card before account was officially opened. Then talked to second rep and he said that the offer is now closed for all AL branches.
In branch visit is required 100%, or can we get by with a phone application? I live in Orlando, so about an hour away from a branch
I went into the Gainesville, Florida branch today and applied. Nice guy, easy app, soft pull. I'm liking BBVA so far.
Any DP's on what counts as DD?
I spoke with a CSR about opening an account over the phone, she said the account opening is done with their telephone banking department but you have to go in branch to sign paperwork and make the initial deposit.
She didn't sound 100% confident, but the answer I got anyway indicates you can't fund with a CC and get the promotion, it's one or the other.
I'm going to try to open over the phone today and fund w/ CC. Will follow up.
