Avoiding Fees

BizEssentials Checking, $7.50 Monthly Fee

This is waived if you have a minimum daily collected balance of $5,000.

BizEssentials Savings, $0 Monthly Fee

No monthly fee.

Early Account Termination Fee

The fine print states that the account must be kept open and in good standing for 6 months. We can assume that they will take the bonus back if you don’t fulfill this requirement.

Our Verdict

You don’t get a straight cash bonus, which is a negative, but the requirements for this are relatively easy for the BizEssentials Savings account. There’s no fine print stating that you need to keep $2,500 in the account for 6 months, so you can theoretically open the account with $2,500, wait a little while, and transfer most of your funds out. The BizEssential Checking requires you to tie up $5,000 for 6 months to avoid fees and is not worth it.

Technically, there is no explicit state limitation indicated on this offer, but you need to open the account in-branch, which limits its availability. For example, the only First Tennessee branch in Texas is Houston, making this uneconomical for most Texans.

  • Here is the same offer without the expiration date:

As long as you put your information in the form, and fulfill the requirements you will get the bonus.
This offer says nothing of having to open in branch, so if they let you open the account online you will get the bonus.

You might even be able to double dip by opening in branch, and then filling out this form (please don't ask the banker):

  • The Houston, TX location is a "First Tennessee Commercial Banking" location, which apparently only services business solutions and Private Client. That's why searching for branches using the locator map won't actually yield any results in TX.

Any DPs of actually being able to walk into the Houston centre and open up a regular consumer checking/savings account?

    • The Houston location appears to be for businesses only, but the banking promotions are specifically for business accounts, not personal accounts. They're called "BizEssential."

My spouse and I each have our own sole-proprietorship businesses, so it sounds like we can get enjoy this offer twice :)

    • I am not sure, but I assumed it would work because this is a business banking bonus.

DPs about personal banking products would be awesome though!
