American Airlines is the highest at 1,000 miles, United is at 800 if you have the United card, Southwest and Alaska is at 700. You can use the Barclay portal for 1,000 points worth $10 in travel.

Our Verdict

These offers come out periodically. You can even do both deals to get double rewards. Make yourself a note to cancel before the next charge if you don’t want the subscription to continue. From memory, you need to call in to cancel (unless you live in CA).

  • This deal came back in late 2019 and I bought a WSJ subscription from Alaska's site. They didn't award the miles "up to 15 days after purchase". Alaska Customer Care stated the terms were to be subscribed for 45 days then the promo is honored.

    45 days later no promo! I responded to my original Customer Case Inquiry # and no response.
    At this point I'm <2 weeks away from getting charged $19/49/mo for a subscription without them ever honoring the deal.

  • The portals still say 8 weeks for $1, but I don't see that once I get to the Barron's site. It's 12 weeks for $12. Am I missing a coupon code or something?

  • Reminds me of relationship advice a co-worker dude likes to give out. When choosing between 2 attractive propositions.....DO BOTH! So I signed up for both offers. At 1.2 cents per mile, it's $24 worth of miles for only $2.

  • Best tip I picked up either here or on Reddit the last time this was around:

    When you are ready to cancel, go into your online profile and change your state to California. Once you do that you can cancel online and save yourself the hard sell cancellation phone call.

  • Which of these cashback portals have you guys used in the past for this deal that worked? I've only used the United portal in the past that works every time. But I'm thinking of trying a different portal.. maybe Lemoney? I've never even heard of this site before but $10 isn't bad.. I also have a Barclay NFL card so was considering the 1,000 points ($10) too. Has anyone here used Lemoney or Barclay before with this deal and gotten points?

  • I just did this with WSJ in February (UA portal) and cancelled at the end of April. Can I do it again now through the AA portal? Can I do it with Barron's, but not WSJ?

    • I did the Barron's in February and am just now doing the WSJ, but it seems like it has been working for others.

  • I've done these about 10x now.. including back in February(?). Can we just keep churning these offers over and over indefinitely?

  • I'd go for the Southwest Rapid Rewards points because you can't extend WN points with a redemption. (I believe AA, AS, DL, and UA redemptions do extend the expiration date.)

    • SkyMiles don't have an expiration date to begin with.

      And if you're redeeming miles just to keep accounts alive, you're doing it wrong. There's almost always a better (lower opportunity cost) way to keep it alive by earning. You don't have to wait for this offer to come around, giving up hundreds of miles; just use the portal at some other time, and only lose a couple.

      • Good catch on DL. I was focusing on how a WN redemption, in contrast to the other airlines listed, doesn't extend the expiration date. I should've left out DL.

        I'm not sure where you thought I was advocating redemptions to prevent expiration. I think we're making the same point, that spending $1 to earn a few hundred RR points for $1 is cost-effective, particularly when redemptions don't forestall expiration on WN.

        • I read your comment as a suggestion to those thinking of burning miles to keep the account alive, not to those thinking that their (recent) redemptions would do so.

          In any case, I still think it's a bad deal to go for the WN offer over the others, unless you (1) have no interest in AA or UA whatsoever or (2) are targeting a WN redemption and need the miles.

          Whether or not redemptions count is irrelevant. Forgoing 100-300 miles is worse than forgoing a handful of miles by opting to go through the WN portal for a (different) small purchase.
