Our Verdict

Sweet deal. These stores sell $500 Visa gift cards, and you should be able to get $15 back in groceries on a purchase of a $500 card, all while racking up some grocery spend. Or use Chase Freedom for 5x through the end of June.

  • Sorry for the noob MS question, but if I buy a VGC with an Amex Blue Cash Preferred, will it count as a cash advance, or be coded so that Amex will know it's a gift card, or do they not get that detailed of data? I am trying to hit the $1000 spend in 90 days for the upgrade I recently did, and this seems an easy way to do it. Also, is there any easy way to turn that VGC back into cash without losing a large chunk in fees, other than just spend it as I go?

  • FYI -- At least in Giant in MD, gift card purchases of $250 or above require a manager key/override and can't be done at self checkout. Deal is still worth doing, but just makes it slightly annoying.

  • I'm hoping for a Visa gift card gas points deal before July 6 so I can double dip like the recent Happy cards deal.

    • No Visa GC deal that I'm aware of, but 3x gas points on MC starts at Giant/S&S on Friday. A better deal for most folks, especially since Giant's food prices tend to be on the high side (personally, I primarily go to Giant for free gas, not groceries). We've also had the Safeway/Acme deal (good through Saturday if you loaded it) where you get an instant $10 off on a $500 Visa GC purchase. For most folks, that's also a better deal. The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic have been spoiled with supermarket gift card deals lately.

    • At least at Giant of PA, the $15 is taken off your grocery bill that you purchased the gift card so you have to use during that transaction.
