The Offer

Stop&ShopGiantMartin’s

Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s have an offer showing in their circular for July 26th – August 1st, 2019:

  • Get 8x fuel points any Happy gift card type

Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

The Fine Print

  • Valid July 26th – August 1st, 2019
  • Must use store card to get and use the points
  • Be sure to double check that your local store is running this offer before buying
  • “We now accept credit cards for the purchase of Visa, Mastercard, and American Express gift cards”

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon.

  • Max discount in some areas is $1.50. In other areas, there might not be any max.
  • You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1. (Giant PA and Martins might expire at the end of the following month.)
  • Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included. (Giant PA and Martins might only be valid at their own gas stations.)
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
  • Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card and you’ll usually get the cash price; it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.

Our Verdict

The Happy cards work at a wide variety of locations. Use a card that earns bonus rewards at the grocery.

  • who's ready for a class action? They are killing our thirsty cars with no cheap Shell gas now...more than 3 weeks...

  • @will @chucksithe

My S&S app is showing $10 off grocery purchase with the purchase of $50 Happy Card (minimum $10 grocery spend). It's showing digital coupons for 8 different Happy cards with an 8/14 expiration date. So you should be able to stack the 8x gas points that end tonight with the $10 off by clipping that coupon. Idk if it's targeted or not, they're showing in the app as "digital bonus" coupons.

There's also another gift card promo going on at Market Basket (MA, NH, ME) for 10% off Staples, Nike, Bed Bath & Beyond, L.L. Bean, Old Navy, Gap, Happy Dining, & Happy Student for July 28th to August 10th.
The ad is at the bottom of the second to last page of the circular

  • Got no points at all for a Happy card despite the offer appearing in my weekly circular.

  • @will

Just got notice from Stop & Shop that "gas rewards" (they are no longer calling them that, just "points") points can now be used to purchase groceries. 100 points = .10¢ off per gallon of gas OR $1 off groceries.

Seems useful for people who don't drive much or have hybrid/electric cars and don't consume much / any gas.

There is also a $5 off $30 purchase "First time digital sign up bonus" for enrolling your S&S card online, opt into receiving emails and a $5 digital credit should appear in S&S app.

    • Interesting...I have not got the email (yet). Have to do some analysis to see which is better for those who can do either. Groceries generally overpriced at S&S though the same goes to say for Shell gas as well. However all else being equal, I would say gas is better to use the points on because of the possibility to get and pay with discounted Shell gas cards which would make the gas competitive with Costco gas the lowest prices gas on earth (I mean for comparison purposes only).

      • At least until the end of December, I find the cheapest gas to be Exxon/Mobil with the 10% back Amex offer.

        • There is no single source of discounted Shells...just have to wait for the deals like at grocery stores when they run buy 50 get 10 coupon (up to 26% including the 6% Amex CB), the Amex Sync BB deal ongoing now will net 10% for sure is another example. Ebay mis-categorized Shell GC listings used to be another constant source with discount rates as high as 24.5% (after amex CB for buying the eBay GC at grocery store, eBay bux and cashback), but with sales tax now bring charged on those, that loophole is effectively plugged forever. So just got to keep eyes open I guess. For now, I am going to load up on the BB offer as I am running out.

  • Thanks for the Heads up, which card is best and easy to drain ? I never bought this kind of gift card.

    • Well it all depends if the gift card ban is being enforced or we can buy gf with these happy cards. Anyone??
