It used to be possible to use Target gift cards to buy third-party gift cards online at target.com. A while back, they began insta-cancelling such orders. However, in store it’s always worked to buy third-party gift cards (e.g. eBay, iTunes, restaurant) with Target gift cards. Until now.
As of around a week ago, you can no longer buy 3rd party gift cards with Target gift cards.
Target apparently rolled out an update to their checkout system with this being one of the changes. I noticed at self-checkout that the system doesn’t have the bagging requirement anymore like it used to, so when I scanned a case of water in my cart, for example, it doesn’t require the ‘Skip Bagging’ prompt anymore like in the old days. Self-checkout is much more manageable under the new system. I imagine this is part of the POS update.
Update: as per the comments, some gift cards can still be purchased with a Target gift card. It might be only iTunes that died (along with Visa/MC/Amex which never worked) and all others still work.

Side Note: There also seems to be a temporary gift card activation issue with iTunes gift cards bought from Target stores, according to @giftcardtalk. It’s probably a glitch in the new system.

So can a Target GC to used for anything other than buying merchandise?
Looks like it's now dead for all gift card conversion, AFAIK.

Whew. Had a $200 Target GC in my safe that I totally forgot about. Glad I used it to buy Delta GC's about a month ago.

2 very reliable target near me had register hard-coded not to accept TGC for 3rd party GC on my shopping trip today. This is a new development for the 2 target near me. Maybe this is now system-wide dead?
True, just got this today. It worked for me a week ago. Fking hell, still have $200 Target GC to spend.
Have there been any more data points regarding purchasing third party gift cards with target gift cards?
Can confirm it is blocked at system level in Orlando. Tried two different Target locations in my area and both were blocked. One person said "I didn't know this happened...." so it must've been recent.
Just bought some eBay gift cards at self checkout with Target gift cards in California.
Just bought some EBAY gift cards at self check out in Chicago yesterday.
I bought $1000 worth of Target gift cards around last XMAS when they do the 10percent bonus thingee.
Would have used them to buy giftcards on EBAY, but most of us know that story.
I think it might be the incident (the web link) triggering Target to take some action on gift card conversion...

I bought $400 gift cards using target gift cards today. Just in case, I am going to purchase $1000 more next week to consume most of my remaining target gift cards.
Which brand did you buy? Seems to be alive with some brands.
