Google Fi Now Excluded From American Express ‘Wireless’ Category

Folks on Reddit report that American Express has now added terms to exclude Google Fi from counting as the Wireless category. This matters for things like the $10 Amex Business Platinum credit and for the 4x earn on the Business Gold.

Any purchases from Google Fi, third parties, authorized retailers or resellers are excluded. (Terms link)

From the statement: “Effective June 21, 2024, Google Fi is not an eligible US wireless provider and purchases of Google Fi will not be eligible for additional rewards or statement credits under the wireless rewards category”

From what I gather, it hasn’t worked in a while, and needed manual application to get credit. Going forward it’s less likely we’ll be able to get manual credit given it being clearly excluded.

  • I charged my platinum business three times wireless plan purchase from metro pcs. Because metro coded the charges as

5585702108 EQUIPMENT, I wasn't given the $10 per month credit and customer service rep was not willing to do manual credit even though they are indeed just wireless plan purchases because the phones themselves are free. The monthly service is not free.

Visible, mint mobile both worked for me.

    • I think that's actually the problem. It codes as an Internet service, not a mobile phone service.

  • GoogleFI never posted correctly for me and it was a pain to request a manual credit every month. Amex probably got fed up with all the complaints and Google or its processor probably did not care to fix how it codes when paying through auto pay.

  • Even though the MCC code for the gas stations of wholesale clubs and grocery stores is that of "gas station," as opposed to that of the late t store, Amex expressly excludes them. Same sort of thing. Rather than say it needs to be the proper MCC code, Amex expressly names Google Fi. It is intentional and calculated. A different form of breakage if you will. (I'm not a Google Fi user.)

  • Between Google and AMEX, I think Google is worse, and I think Google is the one to blame for not fixing how their charges post.

  • I heard that Google Fi would not post correctly a long time ago. I use Visible and have never had an issue with the $10 Business Platinum credit posting.

    • Same. Visible posts every month without issue. Calling them every month re: Google Fi was a total waste of time.

  • Just like AMEX supermarket points, for which they do not code Albertsons or Vons big CA grocery chains as supermarkets. I no longer do AMEX as a result.

    • One of my nearby MS-friendly Vons was coded as Restaurants instead of Supermarkets. Went crazy with my Amex Gold for a year or so until I got FR’d then I stopped. Lol

    • This must be specific to your store(s) not coding correctly, I haven't experienced any issues with any Albertson's Group Stores coding and earning correctly in South CA.
