[Fixed] Hawaiian/Alaska Transfers Not Working If You Have A 2 Letter First/Last Name

Update 9/27/24: This has now been fixed.

Yesterday Hawaiian/Alaska transfers went live. Some users reported receiving the following error:

You are not eligible for this exchange. Please check the FAQ section for more details or contact your Loyalty provider

According to datapoints collected on reddit this appears to be occurring if you have a two letter first OR last name. I assume this will be fixed but it’s good to know for those that are affected by this.

  • getting the following error message and names on account match. any ideas?

"You are not eligible for this exchange. Please check the FAQ section for more details or contact your Loyalty provider."

    • Not just that they didn't write tests, they also didn't subject it to enough human tests.

A person writing a test can only test for things they think of and things they can actually test.

A person running a human test who has a knack for trying various random things may find an issue that a planned test wouldn't, plus interactions between multiple pieces of software for which it's hard (and sometimes impossible) to write automated tests.

That's the situation we have at our company, where we write complex software to manage equipment, controlled by separate touch display panels, and it's impossible to create a automated test that covers absolutely everything. And in our case, it's impossible to write a test that covers pushing and scrolling on a touch panel that controls our software, without creating a complex robot with hand gestures.

You can't guarantee that a human will catch everything in a limited amount of time, but a good human tester may have a better chance than an automated test, especially when there are multiple pieces of software running together and a human input is part of the test.

  • Can confirm. I have a two-letter last name and received the "You are not eligible for this exchange" error
