How To Upgrade To The New Chase World Of Hyatt Card & F.A.Q’s

Update 07/25/18: Online upgrades are now possible. Thanks to reader Mark C

Chase launched a new Hyatt card called ‘World of Hyatt‘ and has seemingly discontinued the old Chase Hyatt card, but they won’t be upgrading everybody to the new card automatically. The new card has an annual fee of $95 instead of $75, but comes with some other benefits. We compared the two cards here. If you prefer the new card, you can upgrade and receive a 2,000 point bonus for doing so. Some readers have been asking how to upgrade & Chase has set up a dedicated page for upgrades. You’re supposed to be able to upgrade online, but that feature isn’t currently working (update: it’s now working) so instead you need to call Chase Customer Service on 1-800-436-7941.

F.A.Q’s

Should I upgrade?

That’s a personal decisions and will depend on your unique circumstances. Is it worth paying an extra $20 annual fee for the benefits? You can use our comparison table here to help decide. The answer to the below question will also impact your decision (e.g if you’ve received the bonus 22 months ago it might be better to just wait 2 months then cancel the old card and apply for the new card and get 60,000 points). If you’ve received the card more than 24 months ago I’d just cancel the old card, wait 30 days and then apply for the new card to get the bonus.

Does upgrading reset my 24 month clock?

For those not knowing what this question is about, the new World of Hyatt card states:

The product is not available to either (i) current Cardmembers of any Hyatt Credit Card, or (ii) previous Cardmembers of any Hyatt Credit Card who received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months.

That language specifically states ‘a new Cardmember bonus’. I wouldn’t consider this a new Cardmember bonus, as it’s an upgrade offer. That being said Chase could easily consider this upgrade bonus as a new Cardmember bonus. Realistically we won’t know for some time.

If I upgrade does it count as a new card for 5/24 purposes?

No, it won’t count as a new card and you’ll keep the account history (opening date) of the old card. This means it won’t affect your 5/24 status.

  • I received 20,000 point bonus to my hyatt account. Nothing else it could possibly be from other than upgrade bonus. Hopefully no clawback

  • I'm concerned upgrading will put eyes on my account. I have about 8 new cards in the last 6 months and more available credit to go with it. I think I have to hold off for peace of mind.

  • I have a question. I have had the old Hyatt card for more than two years. The old anniversary has just passed and I paid the AF and got an old FN valid until next year. If I upgrade to the new card now, according to my experience, Chase will refund the old annual fee (perhaps prorated since that's what they did on my Marriott card upgrade, with a two-month fee charged and the remainder refunded) and post the new AF about 5~6 months later from the upgrade month. And I am very sure the anniversary date will become the first day of the month when the new AF is charged (confirmed with Chase CSR; this should be consistent with all Chase card product change). Then the question: will I get a new FN certificate when the AF posted (5~6 months later from the upgrade month) since this is an old card?

  • Why wait 30 days before applying for the new card if you cancel your old card? Does it hurt your credit score?

    • You don't have to wait 30 days. Both my wife and I closed our old Hyatt cards 7/1 and we were approved about 2 and a half weeks later for the new Hyatt card.

  • i got the old card 23 months ago, why don’t i upgrade now and cancel the card in a month and resign up for the new card in a month?

  • i got the old card 23 months ago, why don't i upgrade now and cancel the card in a month and resign up for the new card?

  • I have the old Hyatt card and my card expiration is 1/19. Will they send me a new card or will I be forced to upgrade?

  • Is it confirmed that if you upgrade then your free night anniversary date is reset?

    • Yeah, fill up your 5th slot with a different card that 5/24 would apply to (the new Southwest card would be a good example) and then apply for the Hyatt card a few weeks later. You will end up with both. If you do it the other way around, you will only be approved for the Hyatt card and not the Southwest, since it would put you over 5/24.

    • You would be 5.24 if you get Hyatt... You can get Hyatt if you are over 5.24

  • Why is everyone talking about cancelling their old Hyatt card. Can’t your product change to a Freedom (even if you already have another Freedom) and then wait the 30 days and apply for the new Hyatt card. Seems like the better route to me. Btw, why do we need to wait a full 30 days before applying for the new card. Thanks!!

    • Hyatt card can not be product changed to a freedom... They are not in the same "family" freedom. Freedom unlimited and sapphires are in same family and can be product changed into each other after holding the cards for a year.
