Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
Smart Advantage Checking Account ($350 Bonus)
This account has no monthly fees to worry about
BMO Harris Premier Account ($350 Bonus)
This account has a $25 monthly fee. This is waived with one of the following:
- $10,000 minimum daily balance,
- $25,000 in combined balances with Relationship Waiver,
- or a BMO Harris Financial Advisors, Inc. investment account
Early Account Termination Fee
There is an early account termination fee of $50 if the account is closed within 90 days.
Our Verdict
If you’re doing the savings bonus ($200 or $300) then you’ll have enough money in combined balances to keep the Premier account fee free as well. The savings account earns 0.05% APY for balances $25,000 or under and 0.1% APY for balances $25,000+. The most recent BMO Harris offer was for $200 for opening a checking account, but has been as high as $500 with the same requirements.
This bonus is up to an extra $150 compared to that $500 bonus, but the requirements are much higher. We obviously don’t have any idea if/when that bigger bonus will return so if you can do the full $650 bonus this might be worth considering. Because of that we will add it to our list of the best bank bonuses.

Anyone get paid the $100 for meeting with banker?
Quick DP:
08/28: Account opened (Relationship Checking)
09/13, 09/30, 10/15, 10/31, 11/15, 11/29: Employer DD total > $8000
11/05: $25 monthly service fee (for October)
11/06: $12.50 monthly service fee REFUND (for October)
11/26: Day 90 from account opening.
12/02: $500 bonus posted
12/03: request account downgrade to Smart Checking via online chat.
Overall, it's a pretty smooth experience. $12.50 fee doesn't really hurt since I can earn $35 interest on $10,000 at 4.5% interest rate.
Looks like BMO posts the bonus on the following Monday after your account reached 90 days and required DD amount has reached.
Does WISE no longer work if you push it from your WISE business account?
When trying to redeem C of I from TD to BMO keep getting this message “the bank account you selected has a return code that stops redemptions. Please select a different bank account and click Submit.”
Was very skeptical spoofing this one but it eventually worked.
08/26: Account opened
09/05: 3xxx Wise push coded as RTP
10/15: 4xxx Wise push coded as RTP
10/30: 3xxx Novo push coded as PPD
11/08: $25 service charge. Got refunded after asking for a "one time courtesy waiver."
11/12: 4xxx Novo push coded as PPD
11/25: $500 Posted
As consistent with recent DPs, Wise isn't very reliable anymore. You could try transferring directly from your main bank account to BMO using Wise but it would cost you a good amt in fees. On the other hand, Novo is free and still reliable.
Also, in the beginning, I kept getting denied after trying all browsers on my PC. Sometimes, it's was also an issue with frozen Chex as described by CS. Best bet is to unfreeze everything (Chex, Experian, EquiFax, and TU) and try applying on Chrome mobile. You should get auto-approved most likely.
Overall, this was a fun rollercoaster ride. I finally lived up to Papa Charles' infamous words of "Be the DP you wish to see".
Could you please decode these abbreviations PPD vs RTP?
Not sure what they stand for. You could probably look it up. I was just mentioning how BMO codes transfers from Wise or Novo. Your transfer should be coding as PPD for the DD to count. I won't bet my luck on RTP.
9/3 Opened Smart Advantage checking
9/10 pushed $50 from Flagstar coded as WEB FLAGBK CHK WEBXFR P2P
10/16 pushed $2500 from Visions FCU coded as WEB VISIONS FEDERAL PAYROLL
10/17 pulled $2500 to Flagstar
11/19 initiated $7700 Wise personal pull and push (more expensive .25% plus flat fee)
11/26 (took 7 days to arrive at BMO) coded as PPD WISE US INC PAYROLL DD.
11/26 requested upgrade to Reserve Checking
11/27 new account type took effect
Anyone know if spending the extra money on having Wise pull the funds instead of pushing to Wise makes any difference? Took sooo long and cost over $20 but thought for some reason I’d have a better chance of coding PPD
Could you please decode these abbreviations PPD?
Using the more expensive method guarantees PPD in my experience.
So what is the most expensive method, which DD deposit method works?

Real DD until I hit $7500-8000
Bonus rec'd 11/25/24 $500
How many days after hitting the total DD mark did you receive the bonus?
I did real work DD and hit the total DD mark on my 10/25 paycheck but no bonus yet for me.
You get your bonus based on the terms, counting from the opening date. You can have your DD on week two from opening, and still have to wait the full term.
Current terms are that you have 90 days from opening to complete the requirements, and they have 30 days to pay from that point.
Most see the bonus around day 100 from opening. @guest_1960103
I opened on 9/4/24 so I guess I have about 2 more weeks for the 100 day rule of thumb.
8/25: Opened relationship checking
9/10-11/14: Real DD >$7.5k
11/8: Charged $25 account service fee, waived by calling
11/25: $500 bonus posted
Will downgrade to smart checking and close 6 months after opening
Received $500 today, ~95 days since opened a checking account and ~15 days since upgrading it to the Premier. If I close the account now, will I pay $50 fee because upgrade counts as "new account". Recently received the papers to my postage which suggest it's "new", although account number didn't change.
No, nobody has been charged the $50 ETF after converting.... Just zero it before asking to close, just in case. @guest_1958878
