List Of Credit Cards Closed For New Applications

It has been nice to be able to track cards that have been newly released. I thought I’d so something similar, but this time for cards that have been discontinued and aren’t open to new sign ups anymore.

The List

Unsure on dates:

  • Chase Ink Bold
  • Diners Club Premier/Elite
  • Barclaycard Ring
  • American Express Blue For Business (sometime between 2/22/17 and the BB+ introduction ~5/25/17)
  • Us bank polaris
  • Chase Southwest Business Plus
  • Old Barclaycard Priceline Visa

I’m sure I’m missing some cards, so please comment and I’ll update the list. I’ll also make sure it stays updated as we go.

  • Washington Mutual had a Visa until FDIC shut it down. I got a low limit not secured Visa from them when my credit was not so hot.
Converted to Chase Freedom when Chase acquired the card portfolio.

AOL Visa was discontinued by Chase and converted to Freedom a few years back.

My FNBO cards above still function, but not offered to new customers

FNBO NRA Visa dropped spring of 2018 - I never had that one.

  • Chase United Presidential Plus. Wish I could get one. Not sure on date, but it’s been at least a few years.

Amex JetBlue card. That one is in the last couple of years, I think.

Chase Ink original (1% cash back, no UR). Also must have gone away a long time ago.

Citi AAdvantage Select (Amex network). I have one of these. Not sure when it stopped being available, but a few years ago I think.

  • PenFed stopped taking applications on its 1.5% Defender card and its 5% gas card. Navy FCU stopped taking applications for the unsecured version of its 1% nRewards card.

According to this Doctor of Credit post the PenFed 5% disappeared from online signup in Feb 2017, and the last comment says it was not available even by phone in summer 2017. A MyFico member reported it not being available by phone in Mar 2017.

The Defender card ceased being available when the Power Cash Rewards was unveiled in Feb 2017. PenFed considers the Power Cash Rewards to be the replacement for the Defender.

I noticed that NFCU's unsecured nRewards disappeared from their online list of credit cards sometime in the first few months of 2017. On May 1, a MyFico member reported a discussion with an NFCU customer service rep who said secured nRewards cards are now being converted to GO Rewards cards when they graduate to unsecured status.

  • Old Priceline Visa from Barclays: 2% (or more when redeemed against Priceline purchases) was a great everyday (non-category) card (and still is for those who hold it).
