Marriott To Extend Free Night Certificates Until January 31st, 2021

Update 3/25/20: If your certificate is expiring within 30 days Marriott will actually extend it for one full year. This can be done via chat but might be YMMV. Hat tip to me_frugal.

According to an e-mail seen by Loyalty Lobby Marriott will extend free night certificates until January 31st, 2021. Normally these certificates are given out to credit cardholders and are valid for ~ 12 months after they are issued. Apparently the extension will take place sometime in April. I’ll believe it when Marriott actually extends the certificates, given Marriott’s track record.

  • Between the devaluations at Marriott and the on-peak increases all the places I used these certs are now out of range 35k point wise. Some of them are out of range when not even in on-peak conditions due to Marriott charging on-peak price for fri-sun in off-peak times.

Bonvoyed into oblivion... Canceling my card with them and likely liquidating my points. I'll be 100% Hilton from now on.

    I miss SPG...

  • They finally extended mine and lots of other people's free night certs late last week in a big "sweep". Check your account now.

  • They extended my FNA, which was set to expire 4/2/2020, to 4/2/2021 automatically. Didn't have to do anything on my end.

  • I logged into my account and there are no expiry date on both my travel package and account. Travel package due to expire this July. Dont see any extension yet.

  • Marriott shd give 35,000 points instead of extending free night certificate for this year

  • The should be sued in a class-action lawsuit over inconsistency in their loyalty programs, and their unwillingness to rein in the hotels. They shouldn't be allowed to use any of the bailout cash.

    • Hmm, all the lawyers with free time on their hands... (tsunami of lawsuits on the horizon)

  • Anyone know if they are extending elite status as well? I can see there being far fewer elites next year.

    • Marriott’s treatment of elites will come back to bite them later. They downgraded me this week. The response was rude and unapologetic. I simply wanted to know at which property I could safely stay to earn the 9 nights I was short after having already earned so many nights and stays. The supervisor said read the rules and disconnected. Fine. I’ll pay a credit card annual fee for Hilton Gold and get instant status before I’ll ever stay at a Marriott again.

  • If this were true then Hyatt is the last one. They've been insisting against and extension over phone, email, etc. I have a cert expiring on 4/6 and California's lock down order won't even be over by then.
