Tactics For Reaching The 20/30 Purchase Requirement
Below we’ve included some methods that you can use to help reach the 20/30 purchases required and data points of whether they worked or not.
- Purchase gift cards from Amazon.com starting at $0.15 per gift card [Worked: 1
- Put multiple items through self check out as separate transactions (make sure to do this when it’s quiet to avoid disrupting other customers) [Worked: 1

What Counts As A Purchase?
According to the AmEx terms & conditions there is the following fine print:
- Purchases of good or services must be separate (e.g multiple items at a supermarket will not count as separate purchases)
- Purchases do not include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards or purchases of other cash equivalents
- Returned items DO count towards the purchase count, but you’ll not receive Membership rewards points on returns
What Date Do They Use?
If you make a purchase on January 31st and your statement closes on January 31st, it’ll count as a January purchase even if it doesn’t post until your February statement. Sometimes the transaction date will be different (e.g, when you purchase items online – sometimes the merchant will use the shipping date as the purchase date).
Is It Per Calendar Month Or Billing Period?
It’s per billing period. So if you’re billing period is January 4th – February 4th, you have between those dates to make the required amount of purchases.
Do Authorized User Purchases Count?
Yes, as long as the charge comes up on your statement as a purchase it’ll count towards the total needed.

Are these cards going to be churnable? I'm wondering if I can apply now for the cards and churn the cards later if they bonus is higher?
Doubtful, AmEx is moving towards a one sign up bonus per customer model.
Do you have a way of knowing if a card is churnable? It would be great to have a list of cards that are 'churnable'.
I'm currently working on a list, it's taking a lot longer than expected though.
I've got my eye on getting one of these, but not until I meet the minimum spend on a few others. I like the idea of the 50% point bonus.
I'm personally going to wait to see how the AmEx one bonus per customer update pans out, also hoping for a slightly higher bonus on the preferred.
